185s cylinder painting

I'm rebuilding my 81 185 and the cylinder is kinda pitted i wanna paint it with some wrinkle black but someone told me it will hold the heat in but my sx and tree fiddie are totally painted. Is it OK to paint and if so is 500 degree paint enough?

I would not paint it. Best you can do is use aluminum paint with real alloy in it. And do it very lightly. Any more and yea it can start to hold the heat in.

Why is it that almost all the other Honda engine's are painted?

So I have the motor completely disassembled what if I put it back together without anything in it and sandblasted it then took it back apart and cleaned it out? Would I need to put gaskets in it?

I painted my old 185 with duplicolor cast aliminum engine paint.

I had the engine remove and degrease it all over with brushe and degreaser. Then a light sanding and then very lignt coats of paint.

sure its not a professional paint but it looks great! Hope that helps.

Paint it. Honda painted their engines with an industrial grade baked on enamel paint. Even the natural engines like the 185/200 and Big Red ES engines had a silver baked on enamel to protect the metal.

That's stainless steel braiding I salvaged from the dumpster at work.
