After some research, I discovered that I actually had an 86 tool box on my 85R. I started the search for an 85 box a while back and finally found one. It's in great shape, but didn't come with the stays that Honda used for mounting brackets and the stays I have w the 86 box won't work with the 85 box.

I thought the lids were the only difference in these boxes...nope. The dimensions are all different. Even though the parts diagrams on ServiceHonda show that the 85 and 86 share the same box and hardware, I know that they don't. The 86 box has keeps to help the stays hold the box molded onto the side of the box. This 85 box doesn't have those...both side are slick.

Does anyone have a 85R that still has the original tool box and mounting hardware? I would like to see pics of what the mounting hardware actually looks like. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure mine's original. I'll take some pics tonight when I get home.

Thanks jb2! If I can actually see what they look like, maybe I can fab some of my own. I would really like to use this 85 box, but it is way too rare to mount without proper hardware.

Let's see how these turn out...

This is from the back with the loose hardware "installed". This is all the hardware there is:

This is the hardware - bolt collar spacer:

This is looking up from the axle - this little red loop is actually a support for the tool box. The box just leans on this. It helps keep the mounts from flexing and breaking I figure:

I took this one from the back with one collar in and one out:

The rest of these are just random shots I took since it was off. FYI - I have a PRM grab bar so it looks a little different from stock. You can see how I cleaned the box during the photo shoot. Embarrassingly dirty...

Dude! Thank you for going to all that trouble to give such a detailed representation. That's EXACTLY what I needed to see.

It's very strange that those inner spacer/bushings don't show up in any of the parts diagrams that I have looked at. They only show that it had stays installed. Really interesting. I guess they figured that that wire stay welded to the frame was enough.

Couple of questions:
- Do you feel much wiggle in that box when mounted? (Are those bushings enough support)
- Are the inner bushings made of rubber or plastic? Do they have a metal insert?
Just wondering if I could find something similar that would work or if I should fab some stays for better support.

One more thing... I was about to comment on the Shiner in the background, then I noticed that you only live a stone's throw away from the Spoetzle brewery. I love that beer!

Thanks for the insight!

Funny - the bolts and spacers are listed on the "Taillight" parts diagram. The spacers are #15.

They're really light - probably aluminum. You could easily make some with a lathe. Or even use some of the plastic spacers like you can get at Home Depot.

The way the box is built, when it's loaded up, the weight is on the outside of the box mounts, so it kind of flops inward/downward and rests on the red support loop.

Yep, now I see those two spacers! Funny, I never really paid attention to them on the diagrams... I guess partly because they are separated by that line and also because I was focused on the stays (#17 & #18). This is still really confusing to me... I just don't understand why those stays are pictured and listed, if Honda didn't even use them. Maybe it was an early/late mid-year parts transition. Hmmm...

Anyway, thanks again for the great pics!

I think Honda uses the same IPB image for 85 and 86.

I notice if I'm looking at an "85" image, the PNs for the 86 stuff is not listed.

Yep, you're right. Same image for both years. Maybe the "inset" is for "85 only".

Well, I got lucky and found 2 of those spacers online at a dealership in NC. Hopefully, they are what I need to get this thing mounted. Thanks again! I went ahead and ordered 2 of the outer stays that were used on the 85 350x too. I know it's not correct for the R, but it may give a little extra support.

Excellent score on those parts!

What are you using for a search? Something online or drop by the local dealer or ???

Where are you in "North Texas"? Going to the OK sand dunes next weekend for Rampage?

I actually just called my local dealer and he did a parts search for me and gave me the info for who may have them. I see that I said "online"...that's not exactly true...sorry.

We are just north of Dallas and would love to try to make it to Rampage, but am working weekends right now. Prolly not going to happen.

Thanks for the info, but weren't the outer stays used on 85s too? The first pic on post #7 of this thread is of an 85 350x tool box, right?

Yes...any and all pics would be appreciated. Thank you! There is surprisingly very little info out there on these boxes. Add the fact that the parts diagrams show parts that may not even really be present, and it's a real head-scratcher!

http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/110987-350x-Toolbox-Mounting-questionsI'm no expert on what year, but yes that appears to be a 350X to me. I've never seen those outer stays before, very interesting.

Red, I reread your post and now see that you were talking about the INNER stays. Thanks, until now I thought you were referring to the outer stays.

You are correct! I'm thinking that Honda just decided to use the same image for both years (even though the boxes look completely different) and simply change the parts list for the two year models. I believe that's why we don't see part numbers for inner stays when looking at an "85" parts list. Also, I just noticed that if you are looking at an 86 diagram and parts list...the spacers (#15) aren't listed.

I'll be there Thursday and Friday. I bet Kazanders will be there at least those days if not all week prior since they got their sweet Toy Hauler.

Thursday and Friday are usually great riding days - no crowds and the RZRs haven't butchered the sand yet.

It just hit me - we're a week away!
