View Full Version : The Pay it Forward Thread...

I have too many hobbies and interests so I also belong to a number of firearm, 4x4, MC, custom culture, hot rod, and a primitive archery forum.

One thing they almost all share with the exception of 3WW and a couple others is a "pay it forward" thread. I did a search to see if we had ever had such a thing and I couldn`t find anything so I thought I would bring up the subject.

There are a lot of folks on here who frequently give away/ or help other members with parts for no charge either out of kindness, advancing our interests, or just because you would rather just give something away for the hell of it.

SO how it works is one guy starts by offering up something for free (no charge for part or shipping) and whoever wants it can claim it for themselves (first come, first served). The OP ships the item off to the person who claimed it with the understanding that the person who claimed it will now post up something of his own for someone else to claim at some point very soon. Yeah....it`s the honor system but we are all adults so I don`t foresee much of a problem.

Preferably, the parts offered will be in good usable condition and theres no limit on the number of parts offered in one post. For instance, if you have a parts lot of YTM200 hardware, obviously you wouldn`t give away one bolt at a time but offer the whole lot. It also doesn`t matter what the retail value of the part you offered up is. This isn`t Secret Santa with a $25 limit, it`s not a good-guy contest......just some guys and gals being good people.

Now you don`t have to have a part to offer up immediately after you claim one but it would be nice so that we can keep the continuity. Also, you can offer up something even if nobody has yet claimed the previous offer...again, for continuity reasons. Usually someone will claim what`s offered at some point but I can`t guarantee the need will be there the very minute the offer is made.

SO......Please post your opinions, ideas, rants, beefs, or support. I got real thick skin so if you don`t like the idea and think we look like a bunch of pussies for bringing the idea up, say so. If you like it and would be interested in participating, say so. If you are neutral and just don`t care, say something. Im also open for ideas on how to better implement this if everyone likes the idea.....NO, I don`t want to keep track of who paid it forward and who got a freebie but did not. There`s no point in the thread if it isn`t totally selfless. If you feel like someone may take advantage of your kindness and you would prefer not to deal with that sort of thing you don`t have to participate.

I can be a huge D!CK sometimes so frankly, I could always use some good Karma or maybe make up for some past sins so this is my way of giving back

I can go first if nobody else wants to start.

Thanks ahead of time.

I think its a great idea. Maybe the benefactor should at least pay the actual shipping though. I think people should also be honest enough to only ask for something for one of their personal bikes and not something they may be trying to flip for a profit. If i hadintentions of fixing a bike to sell i would not be ballsy enough to ask for something for free. Luckily for me i rarely sell anything i just keep building barns

With that being said i have a 1984 honda 110 seat that i no longer need. Bottom sides are rusted out buti got a new cover on it. Its not pretty but could get someone by a few years. Theres wrinkles in the vinyl. Never used spray adhesive before and used it to put on cover and damn did it grab so theres no getting out the wrinkles and i learned a lesson. It would at least look better than a completely duct taped seat. Its up for grabs if uou pay the sctual shipping. Honor system. I would tell you the actual shipping cost snd you could send money paypal, check, bankorder, whatever. Trying yo get the ball rolling here

Don't know what kind of primitive archery you're into but I have a told Fred bear compound that I haven't used since I was 12 years old don't know if you consider that primitive or not I do not foresee myself ever using it again. As I hunt with modern compounds now. It makes me think of Ted Nugent when ever I see it

Will this get its own forum category like the classifieds section? Would make sense. Than again im not the one modifying or changing the website

I like the idea, I say start a new thread for each model. That way people will be able to search. For instance:

83-85 200x PIF...

Front fender pay shipping and it's yours...

If anyone has machine specific items they would like to add, then it's simple.

I couldn`t answer this as I`m no kind of admin or mod here so it`s out of my hands.

maybe someone whom is will chime in

good point... some stuff costs a lot more than other stuff to ship and I`m not sure what to do about our overseas members. Hate to leave them out.

This is a great idea. i have a lot of stuff not really worth selling but still good usable stuff. Then again a lot of this stuff i have would cost more to ship than its worth. I was going to send a clarke tank to a member here and a spray painted clarke tank with no petcock is not worth $44 dollar shipping but the main benefit is that we will have a more open market and a better parts supply. Lemme go dig through my stuff

I've had a few members send me items free of charge (thanks again guys!!!). I would love to reciprocate, but getting parts over the border while headed North is a little tough . and I don't have many extra trike parts Anyway, I know the spirit to support such a thing exists as I have already been the beneficiary.

me too....I`ve tried to reciprocate elsewhere as best I could and I hope I`m worthy in the end.

So should the shipping costs be at the giver`s discretion? I have no problem with anyone asking for shipping reimbursement especially if it was a set of fenders or any other big money ship cost item.

Thoughts?

I of course can only speak for myself. If I am in need and someone is willing to offer me something I would be more than happy to pay for the shipping cost to get it. The choice would be mine to look at alternatives or other "bidding" sites and make the determination as to weather it's worth the cost or not prior to asking. On the other hand if someone is in the process of a build and I happen to have something they really need and are in a pinch, I would most likely just get them the part and know that it will be worth it to see them finish it. "Karma" Just the knowledge that I gain (I do ask a lot of questions) from everyone on this site, to me is worth it's weight in gold. (Free manuals, pictures tutorials, build threads, experiences ext) are things that to me are priceless. Prior to me finding this site, I put out a ton of money on wrong parts and gas money just to here most "cycle" shops give me the cross eyed look followed by "check eBay" for parts.

So.. After all that. I'm more than willing to work with anyone that takes this as serious as I do. I know that most people on here feel the same way.

I am all about this idea. There are a select few on this site (you KNOW who you are) that have gone above and beyond many times for me. I like to do the same with my time and labor for others. I also have parts that I am willing to contribute to this as long as buyer pays shipping. How do we start? It would be nice to have a forum section for this.

I love the idea. This is something that is needed for several reasons. I have been fortunate enough on a few occasions where someone has passed on something to me and out of good faith, I did the same for others a few different times. I had even donated a few parts for one of the TF giveaway trikes. It's an excellent idea however I do agree with a few things: 1) I think this needs it's own category somewhere so that people know where to go for it, 2) I agree that there should be a new post each time someone has something to offer that falls under another subject. If there is already one started for 84 250R parts, I think you should continue to post within that thread, and 3) I think that the giver should decide on whether or not shipping should be paid for by the buyer or they decide to take it on themselves. Since the items I gave away were not too large or heavy, I paid the shipping costs myself. As for larger parts or heavier items, I can see how others wouldn't want to take on that expense. I do believe that this should be posted somewhere so that people don't get the wrong idea and get upset when they are asked to pay shipping costs. Have to remember, not everyone on here is on the same page and there tends to be a few who make life difficult and you cannot please regardless. Just my thoughts and when ready, I have a few things set aside for sure. Maybe someone can pass this along to an administrator to get this going. Can't imagine that they would be opposed.

Thanks for the suggestion and idea, great idea.

Ditto.....and I`m ready too. I need to get back out in the garage and see what all I have to give but as for anyone else, you can kick it off in this thread or better yet make an "Official Pay it Forward Thread" yourself or I can do it and we can just keep this one for discussions and that one for action. I`m sure after we have some success with it, Billy or someone can make a new subforum or section just for this.

Billy, If you are reading this...how hard is it to get a "Pay It Forward" forum section set up? Or, would you rather us start an action thread to see if we get any traffic?

Hey man, maybe you didn't come up with the idea..but you brought it here. ;)

Being someone who does do Faceplant, I don't think it would be best to spread the word there. Granted, quite a few of us who are members here play around over there.. But sadly, there is alot of riff-raff on many of those 3-wheeling groups on FB. Many of those clowns aren't here. It's a damned good thing too because you get alot of mouthy know-it-all kids who spread alot of bad advice/ideas then turn around and lay the foul language and attitude on those of us who occasionally try to bring some real advice to the table. Many of us refrain from even getting involved to try and help because we don't care to have our phones blow up with FB notifications because we got sucked into a perceived urinating contest with a keyboard know-nothing. I have no problem with helping people, but some refuse to be helped. (we have covered this topic extensively here in the open forum)

I think it best to keep this amongst the membership here.

Im on a farmall forum as well Have a few f-cub tractors and a farmall super A. Anyhow on that site they have the "cub express". Obviously tractors and parts can be large and heavy, thus costly to ship much like a set of atc tires and rims or a frame or engine would be. Basically a lot of these guys are retired or whatnot or go out to pick something up or visit family or whatever it may be and if there close to something another member is interested in they snag it while close and eventually get it to them at one of the tractor shows or "cubfest" or whatever. For example i live ten minutes south of Sandusky and right close to the turnpike and route 2. Anyone from ohio, michigan, etc probally knows about Cedar Point ( a large amusement park, Google it). And many in the area go there at least once a year with family. If someone from northern michigan was going to park for example and someone from southern ohio needed the frame they have they could bring it with them on there trip and drop it off at my house, i would have no problem with something like that. Then say a couple weeks later when the southern ohio guys family visited the park they could pick the item up on there way to park or way back home. I for example am in a good location for something like that and have plenty of storage. Even if i were not home, if i knew they were coming to pick it up or drop something off i would have it sitting next to the barn waiting. Sorry for any mispelling. I usually lay here in bed with my daughters ipad and it sucks typing on these but more convenient than giant laptop.

As you can see my post count is low but i have been lurking around this site for quite some time. Usually I am using all of your guys knowledge and dont contribute much as I dont know much but someday hope to. im totally self taught with help of forums, internet, and manuals when it comes to anything with a engine. So i keep my mouth shut as to not confuse anyone else who is trying to learn. So i feel "guilty" not being able to give back the knowledge that has been given to me. So the pay it forward would be a great way for me to give back to our helpful members that have helped me

I have had that exact idea for here. It happens occasionally on it's own. But there are a lot of guys here on the east coast that cross paths a LOT more than we realize. I travel from here in PA to Rochester New York, now thru August. I haven't been used yet lol. And yes, I posted .. Thanx for posting. If you're into tractors, you can't be too bad, even though their the wrong color lol..Do you do any Masseys?

jakeesspoo
04-22-2015, 07:53 AM
Just farmall and allis chalmers tractors. Masseys were not big locally. I think it just depends on the area and what dealers were first in the area that dictates popularity around you. The farmslls are kinda honda red though when clean:lol: Back to 3w's I do believe people cross paths more thsn you would think also. I'm also right on Lake Erie. I have talked to a few people that are located a couple hours from me that I wanted something from and ask them if they ever came up my way. Surprisingly many people came up this way within 15-20 minutes of me to a family's boat dock or cottsge or what ever and I met them there when they came up saved me hours and that much in gas so you never know where people are headed.
