250R stripped Trans Oil bolt! :(

Dammit.. this 250R I recently purchased has a stripped trans oil bolt.. Any tricks to repair this before I decide to weld a nut on there LOL

goes on basically finger tight and if I turn it hard enough with fingers.. she will spin :(

Very common issue. Google it and you will find a lot of info about it. TRX250R.net will be able to get you all fixed up.

I feel your pain - for me it was when changing jets on my '85 R - lower carb bowl plug was stripped - explains the slight fuel leak. Part no longer available at dealer but I did find a complete NOS Honda lower bowl assembly.

Go to autozone or something and get a repair plug. It's rubber and when it's placed into the hole and you turn it, it gets fatter and I have used them on 2 vehicles and my 250r too with no problems . They're only a couple bucks and will do the trick.

Clean the area real good with the bike on its side or stood on the grab bar with it drained.
Carefully look at the case. Many times a guy tried to put a self tapping oversized plug in as this was a common problem on the 250R. The problem with over sized temporary plugs is the case boss was very thin at the drain plug area and the oversize plugs would crack the case. You will see a crack up into the case if this has happened to your engine in the past. If you inpsect the area and see no crack up into the hole, then follow this link below on how to install a helicoil.
I forget the exact size needed for the 250R but do a search and it will pop up.
The most important thing is to keep the installation straight and you will have to trim coils off tye heli coil threads as they are too long and will protrude up into the case and hit the transmission gears. Trimming coils is easily done one coil at a time with a sharp pair of side cuts on the end opposite of the driving tang for the insert tool.

Or you can look into the time sert option which you will find info and vids on the net as well, but usually are special order and a little more costly.
If you jam over size self tapping plugs in there, they will strip again sooner than later and they will crack the case which will always leak no matter what unless you have it welded then repaired correctly. Sorry for the book, but I am tired of having cases welded from improper quick fixes.

Good advice Mosh!

Tip - When using a tap, put grease on it to keep all the shavings together on the tap. Keeps them from making their way into the cases:D

Pretty easy fix, I would suggest a timesert (12mmx1.5, don't go bigger!) before a helicoil personally but both will work well. Take your time.

Make sure you get either a copper or aluminum washer, not steel.

I read that some people use a tap for the size of the Suzuki LT250R plug because it is larger than the atc/trx drain plug.

Time sert is the only way to go with these. Once you purchase the kit its a pretty easy install if you are mechanically inclined.
