I have a similar noise but by doing the old long screw driver to the ear trick, it seems mine is coming from the bottom end. Everything shifts fine and runs like a bat outta hell. I'll be watching the tread. These guys are the best at helping out.

my 83 does not sound like that either. that thing has a pretty loud rattle... i'd pop the head off and see whats up. seriously. if you've never taken the top end off of one of these you will be surprised how easy it is.

does it sound that bad while riding or is it worse at idle out of gear?

sucks chasing your tail like that....

only smart ass answer i have is.... ride it HARD. you will find out sooner or later what was clunking lol.

my guess would be a bearing. maybe one the clutch basket rides on? mine was sloppy and clunked sorta at idle....??

could be those too certainly. one needs a blind puller to remove.
