Hey guys a couple months back I started on my 250r build.. so I have a few pics saved up. Still not done but its getting there. 213047213048213049

The first 3 pics are from when I picked it up close to a year ago I'd say. I was given some money with it so I picked up a few things to get it moving and looking somewhat decent. A lot of things wrong with it.. and needed a rebuild asap. I ended up rebuilding it and the motor lasted a month before it blew the base gasket. I caught it before it seized up fully but I still put it away for the year. Sat for a few months before I tore it down and moved everything into my bedroom. My room was half the size for a good 2 months =)

I sent the frame, swinger and other parts off to get powdercoated. After getting them back I slapped it all together and cleaned off the dirty axle the best I could. Got off all the dust.. grease and whatever else was on it. 213050213051213052213053213054

Up next is the main part.. the motor. I got it all wrapped up tight and shipped it off. Had* some bad case damage.
213055213056213057213058

The motor is still gone and being fully rebuilt.. seals, bearings, crank, cases fixed, clutch, top end.

I shipped a few parts out to Greg King! ( Thanks again!!)
213059213060

They of course looked amazing! I shipped out the fork bottoms 2 weeks later due to money.
213061213062

I got a new killswitch, tether switch, MSR clutch lever, new front MC with a custom made cover (says ATC 250r and looks amazing!!) (Made by Mikes custom machine shop on facebook)
213075213076

Next I finally got my skidplates from PRM.. and sorry to say.. they fit horribly for me! Even scratched and chipped my fresh powder coat :(
You may notice i ditched the maiers shrouds and went with brand new oem shrouds =)
213063213064213065213066

Now I finally got my fork bottoms back and after an hour of fighting with the forks I got them together.. filled with fluid and ready to absorb some bumps once again!
You'll also notice I put an 85 seat cover on an 86. I like the 250r better than the ATC and yes i realize there are a few wrinkles.
213067213068213069

I ended up shipping the tank out to get sanded and polished. I don't have the tank yet but will post pics when it arrives.

Next I wanted some spacers so I just bought some 2.5 inch stud extenders for when I run the 18s. I got the 18s from a buddy.. and i did not put the tires on those rims.. so I realized 1 is backwards haha. Those are also NOT the rims i'll be running.. they are just what they came on and I needed a little preview of what they'd look like. My opinion.. the swinger needs to be a +2 and it'll look perfect with 18s.

that's some nice work so far...looks really nice like new now.

Are you going to do donuts in the spare bedroom? That's awesome, you should add the pics to the "show off your work space thread".

Well ran into a little snag! Minor though luckily. My brake pads hit the rotor and as soon as I took the picture I realized the brake hub isn't fully in? I cant seem to get the hub in all the way.
213220213222

Also looking for the spacer that goes on the swinger. Holds the brake stay in place. I seem to have misplaced mine and cant find it anywhere.. and if anyone has the snapring or knows where to buy that exact size would be great. Paypal ready!!

Looks great . Are you having BDT do the case repair. They do some awesome repairs on the liquid R cases plus they build some nice big bore motors.

You can use a bushing for the brake stay from a 400ex. Like $7 from honda.
It has a flange on the back so you don't need the snap ring

@RPMRestorations - You sure do! I actually got them when I got my 82 250r.. guy had no idea what they were.

@R.J.M - Thank you!

@atc300r - Yup, and its actually almost done.. I'll post pics when its fully done though! Already looks great.

@The_Steve_Man - I did not know that.. thank you so much! I didn't even know what to look up for that part so i'm going to start checking ebay right now!

Thanks guys!! As soon as its broke in and ready to hit some trails i'll message you! I'm always looking for more people to ride with. I actually did not do the case. Mr. Selvy himself did that and does a wonderful job at that. They weld it up and machine it down to look new. You can contact BDT if you ever need case repairs.. they do fantastic work!

Rob and BDT do some great work to these liquid Rs. . I haven't started putting my 85 motor back together yet with the cases BDT fixed. Im doing a couple other aircooled 250r motors first. You came a long way with this trike looks great. Are you going to put a UPP case saver on it or something different. Looking forward to your ride report when you get it done.

They do amazing work! Its unbelievable what they can do. How bad was your case damage? Thanks a bunch! I'll be going with the BDT case saver anodized red. I'll be doing a first start video and i'll be sure to let everyone know how everything goes. More pics to come before that though =)

First and second pic is of the left case before and after. A lot of places I talked to wouldn't touch them because of where the damage was. And like you I looked everywhere for decent cases. Most I found needed repair more than mine and the seller was asking $150-$250 a set. Next pics is of the right cases repair. Well its been over a month now sense I've last updated and about 2 months if not more sense some motor work. Rob has been dealing with his races and other motors but has finally finished those projects and has started working on my motor once again! The cases are all finished now and he will be moving onto the crank today or tomorrow and is going to pick up my cylinder from a buddy that did a process called EDM to remove my broke exhaust flange bolts. He will hone the cylinder and start assembling the bottom end. Initially I was going to go with Black bottom end and bare top but the color has sense changed to what I feel looks a lot better than black would. I told him to surprise me on the top end color wise.

Honda ATC Guy - I forgot to ask my builder what the name of the paint was sense I didn't hear from him till today.

There has been an update today and Rob is moving quite quickly now with the motor. 217467217468217469

I'm going a different route with the motor now as well. It was going to be all stock but some things have since changed =)

218500Ok guys.. it's been a very long 5+ months waiting for this motor.. it isn't here yet but it's finished and looks awesome! It's ported and polished, 265cc and it's coming with a 38mm carb. Other than that it's all stock.218497

Whew, very nice. Hold on cause it's gonna rip. Did Rob do anything for porting or did he change the compression with a cr gasket?

CodyRosa
07-14-2015, 07:40 PM
Thank you! For the head we went with an O ring instead of a gasket so I'm not sure if that'll bump up the compression or not? For porting it was a $300 port job.. that's all I know to be honest haha. I have a few pics of the cylinder.

o-rings won't bump compression. Just an advanced way to seal the head. Looks great!

Depending on how the system is set up and installed, in many instances, if you used a 2 O ring system similar to the one below, and it no longer has the standard head gasket which is around .028” thick if I remember correctly, AND the head you are running is orig or has the same or less volume as the orig, you raised the compression by at least .5 [1/2 a point] . . Also, unless it has a recessed squish band the piston will likely be too close to the head at tdc especially when it’s running.

If your exhaust port was raised when it was ported, this will reduce the compression, therefore if the O rings increased the compression and the exhaust port was raised which will reduce the compression the two mods will cancel each other out to some degree.

The most important thing you can measure is static compression . . If it is less than around 140, it is pretty wimpy for high perf apps . . If it is around 170 or higher, it is very good.

Thanks guys! I still havent got the color name haha.. Barnett that was a nice little bit of info so thanks! I was told it will bump it up just a tad like you said. So what is static compression?

atc300r.. I highly recommend it! You definitely wont be disappointed.

Well i got the motor finally!! and got it all put together to find out she has 230 psi when I'm only running pump gas. I'll be overnighting the head and hopefully it'll be back before the weekend which was my deadline for this wheeler lol.. so i'm cutting things very close here.218820218821

Barnett that was a nice little bit of info so thanks! I was told it will bump it up just a tad like you said.

no prob, you're welcome . . yeah, changing the distance from the piston to the head more than .010" in any vehicle will make a measurable change . . Changes of .040" or more can be felt.

So what is static compression?

it is the amount of compression an engine has when just being turned over by the electric starter or kick starter.

the test should be done with the throttle at least 1/2 open . . it is also called uncorrected compression.

the compression while it is running is called corrected or dynamic compression . . dynamic is the most common term.

the compression will vary slightly with engine rpm which is why its referred to dynamic . . dynamic basically means moving or changing.

barnett468

.

Well i got the motor finally!! and got it all put together to find out she has 230 psi when I'm only running pump gas.

that's perfect....if you are using 130 octane, lol.

fyi - cheap compression gauges can be off by up to 20 lbs.

230 PSI is redic. That head sounds like its had some work done to it or the cylinder has been milled down. Who are you sending it back to? Rob?

CodyRosa
07-23-2015, 02:25 PM
yea no 230 was absolutely crazy.. i could barely kick the thing over lol.. I'm honestly not all sure what he has done to it to get it that high.. all I know is he is overnight a new head for me to use and i should have it running by saturday! He said he had to open the dome up some more? Yup I sent it back to Rob already!

yup, they leave the squish band alone [hopefully] and just enlarge the dome to the size/volume they calculate would be correct.

cool, rob will take care of you. Yes, he is making the dome pocket deeper for increased volume. For a stock head you should be running around 23cc's. I typically run my heads at 21-22 and my compression ends up being around 189-190 and I use 93.

CodyRosa
07-23-2015, 03:54 PM
If I knew where to get 93 around here I'd be all up for 190 PSI... but I have never seen it anywhere around here. Minnesota probably doesnt even sell it anywhere lol..

barnett468

If I knew where to get 93 around here I'd be all up for 190 PSI... but I have never seen it anywhere around here. Minnesota probably doesnt even sell it anywhere lol..

if you wanted t run more compression, you could buy torco gas additive which can raise it a couple octane points if you mix it rich, or you can buy real lead additive . . there is only one place in the world that makes it and as far as i know, it is still legal to use off road, but of course it is lead.

http://home.comcast.net/~gregs.speed.shop/site/

this being said, imo, in your case, the increase in power by increasing compression by 20 psi, is not enough to make it worth hassling with additives . . if you were a pro racer that could utilize all the power then it would be different . . its not like going from 170 psi to 190 psi will make it feel like it has 10 more hp.

CodyRosa
07-23-2015, 05:17 PM
hmm ok well that doesnt sound worth it to me! especially the extra cost of that additive. I'll stick with my 170-180 psi!
