With a little help from some 3ww members, and the drive to build something awesome, I find myself knee deep in a build. The donor is a '88 200sx quad. Quite a rare find as it is the last year of the four wheeled sx. As ol' deuce was wrapping up his super X build I stumbled upon the donor while in search of a new prospect for my next project. 2 comments from the super x thread would not leave my mind:
1. The hardest part was finding a donor. (One was sitting in front of me)
2. Quads make awesome parts bikes. (That's about all they are good for)
So I traded my BR parts machine (which I no longer needed) and $50 and the rest is history...

All the motor needed was a ring job. So I went .20 over 10.25:1 wiseco. Stock 200x exhaust (from dirtwheels). I ordered the wrong gasket set so I am waiting on it to assemble motor and put it in the frame. Put a new timing did timing chain, new clutch plates since I had the cover off. The oil pump chain seemed loose but after researching it is common so we will see. The inside of the motor was very clean so I was glad to see that. Cannot wait to get this machine running. I forgot to mention that this is my first build from frame up. A couple more pics what the hell.

Cool to see another second gen build. When opportunity is staring you in the face (aka donor quad sitting in front of you), you gotta take it. keep up the good work

Yes sir, I wasn't even planning this build it just kind of snuck up on me and I rolled with it. Had to put a couple other ideas on the back burner. I keep telling myself, 1 at a time, otherwise I will screw them all up.

She's a roller, kinda, I just put on a few tires I had lying around and a Chinese shock that would bottom out with my 4 year old daughter on it. I just wanted to see what it would look like with wheels on. I will likely get a new front tire when Its all said and done and I have a decent pair of ohtsu' s that I plan on using for the rear. I love how the 2nd gen 250r axle widens the stance. I also used the quad hubs because they seemed solid and added about an inch of total width to the axle.

Is the thin metal cover over that oil pump gear? Thats what keeps it on......They'll may also be meant to keep some oil in a bath there, I'd have to look at one again....
People take them apart and throw them away.
Best of luck, your getting there!!

Thanks, I never throw anything away. I'll use it some day right... Yes the cover was installed, just not it the pic. I'm pretty sure it was an old post of yours that I read that made me stop worrying about that chain. I couldn't find one for the life of me. A lot of sites show it as being available and even let you order and pay for it only to break the bad news 3 days later that your money has been refunded.

I think I found a solution... I still need to fine tune everything but fitment should be solid. Bottom mount will need to thickened at the brackets and extra gussets will be added for strength and reinforcement. Should make for an awesome ride though.

Prepping the swinger for modifications. It seems to be fairly simple modification. Remove the necessary metal to allow free motion for the longer shock to mount to the lower bracket. Then add some reinforcement. I will likely use 1/4" steel plate. Any advice from the many metal specialists is welcome.

It's hard to tell I still need a few odds and ends. I have decided which fenders to use. I really don't want to go with the 2nd gen plastic. I would rather something ONE but converted from another trike. I still may use the 200 quad fenders. There is just so much to choose from. I may even implement the quad rack just to give it some utility flare. There is such a fine line between quality and cost. I also am waiting on the tank to get brazed and coated. Dropped it off last week and the guy gave me about a month timeline. I wish I knew someone who repaired metal tanks. I just know this prick is going to charge me out the asss.

Figured I would update this build as I have been very busy at work and I just need to tie a few loose ends. One of the main things is fenders. They are so expensive. I really would like something new but I feel that everything that maier produces looks good but doesn't seem reliable. How hard is it to fit 83-85 200x fenders or 81-84 250r fenders? Also waiting on the take to be repaired and redkoted. I got a quart for $30 at o' Reilly which seemed cheap to me. I also acquired a complete rear end off of an 84 200x from a friend for $100. He's got a really nice set of rear fenders that I want but I don't know if they will fit. My shop is a complete mess due to time constraints an inability to clean up after working. I will update as more steps get completed. I'm ready to wheelie this biitchh!!!!

I tried and tried to salvage sole history but it looks like we are gonna have to go with whatever bike bandit has to offer. An hour ago I was chugging beer and throwing tools. I'm over it now. Gotta clean up and roll on.

Well I didn't go with the Duros, instead I'm gonna give the wanda knobbies a shot. The price was legit and I haven't heard anything negative about them. I got one on the trike now and I like the way they look. The ohtsu that's on the other rim is continuing to give me a run for my money. I got a kenda max for the front. Still waiting on the tank but I have another tank that I can use to break the motor in. Hoping to let it eat this weekend. Although, that is yet to be seen.

She got fire tonight, still waiting on the tank though. May use another tank tomorrow just to hear the motor. Also need to figure some way to tension the chain. Maybe some type of idler pulley system. I tried to install a 24mm stock 200x carb but the bowl was too big due to the electric starter. So I changed the bowl and main jet to the 100 out of my 200s carb so that may work. The stock main for the quad was a 98. We will see, I don't think it will be too far off.

I bolted an offset 2 holed bracket to the bottom shock link bolt.I used a lawnmower wheel bolt threw the aluminum L shaped bracket wich is from an old lawnmower. I bolted the skateboard wheel in the other hole and put a spring on it. When I take it off I will lay out the parts and take some good pics. Both of my chain tensioners have held up well. I picked a plastic 200s tank for cheap and with some mods the fit is decent. It's a good backup until the oem tank is done and I dont think it looks that bad.
216038 216039 216040
Now the only thing stopping the ride report is the chain. I will try to figure something out this weekend. It doesn't look too hard. I was able to get the jetting pretty close. 24mm keihin 200x carb (yaegerb) with the 200s bowl to clear the starter, slot style #105 main, #38 pilot, needle on 4th slot from the top. Also fitted an air box from something maybe the quad w/ a uni filter. It's hard to know yet if the adjustment is right but there is no sputtering or bogging with no load. Once the motor is broke in I will do a couple of plug chops. Anxious anxious anxious!!!!

Do you know what that air box is off of? I'm collecting parts to do one of these conversions some day.

I think it is from the sx quad. It wasn't on the parts bike initially. I got the air box from the previous owner when the build was near complete. It's a tight squeeze so you have to run no lid. No boot to the frame, not enough room. I'll post a couple of pics later today.

I used a flexible radiator hose as an intake boot. Uni pod filter, and I used plumbers plugs to seal the breather hole and drain hole until I find the proper hose to fit.

How's the conversion holding up? I've got the donor quad already and am picking up an 86' 200X tomorrow to use. As much as I ride my 250SX, I'm sure I'll love this swap!

Nice!!! I like the ductape. Great start... when your ready, if you'd like i have the front right motor mount template i'll send it to you. When you have the two fronts/spacers and top mounts bolted up--(motor in place) where to put the rear mounts will be staring at you. Just take your time it'll all fall into place. Congrats!!!
Oh and paint the frame LAST after everything else....and get some lighter rear tires....

Thanks Shep, I'll certainly take you up on the motor mount template! Yeah this 200X was literally bought just for the frame. Everything else in it needs lots of attention....
..
Especially those wonderful rear tires:(

She's rock solid, very reliable, and love to run. Good luck on the build buddy.
