LED light bar on a 1985 Honda 250r?

I just got my 36w 7in. Light bar and I don't know how to wire it up to the stock headlight wiring, has anyone done this before, I checked the forums but the only one I could find used a battery but that was a 12v light.

I run a pair of 18W LEDs on my 85 250R along with my stock light.

I wired them to run when I hit high beam - so I have the stock light and 2 LEDs on at the same time.

On the 250R, I cut the high beam (blue) and ground (green) wires running to the headlight and added plugs to connect the new lights.

I run off the stock electrical system with no mods other than the aforementioned splicing.

250r outputs AC for the lighting circuit. you need to either float the ground for the lighting circuit on your stator, or a 4 wire rec/reg monkeyed in somehow.


also some LEDS can take AC current just fine.

I have two green wires, one white, and one blue, do I use both greens for ground or just one?

Does anyone know which wires should be connected to the LED light bar, I have them stripped and ready to connect but I have 4 wires from the stock light and not 3 like the wiring diagram shows.

It's surprising to me that some people are connecting these directly to unregulated AC and not having any problems. When I connected 2 of the 18w 6-LED units to my Tecate with no mods, one of them blew within a few minutes. It probably wasn't the AC as much as the overvoltage coming out of the high output Ricky Stator in my machine, but I'd still worry about blowing them on a stock machine with a 55 or 60 watt lighting coil.

I added one to the T3 when I ran LEDs.

For the OP - just connect the blue or white wire to red on the LED and one of the green wires to black on the LED.

OK thanks, the white is the high beam and the blue is the low beam, does the high have more power than the low?

No. Just filament placement in the bulbs to change the light pattern.

Ah, I hadn't realized that. That's what I did on my Tecate too. I also added a battery after I had trouble with the capacitor I had been using.

I had to use both green grounds as I only tried 1 of them the first time and the light wouldn't turn on, I connected both of them to the black ground the second try and hot dam she worked great, even in the day it's bright!:cool::TrikesOwn

The green wires on the light need to stay connected together, they share a common ground with the kill switch.

Yeah haha when I put my number plate on I chopped the lights and made a quick connect for the headlight so I could swap between lights and number plate, ended up having no kill switch because of that and used a jumper wire to keep them connected
