how to remove spring from shock

im looking to remove the spring off of a 200x shock, i have the two locking nuts loosened but they will not go around the nitrogen resi line. In my shop manual it says that the average guy shouldnt be removing this line to get the spring off. how should i go about this to get the spring off?

Loosen the two nuts as much as you can and at the other end of the spring you should be able to remove a slotted plate that slides off of the shaft and remove the spring from that end. I'm not 100% sure I've never worked on a 200x shock.

Put the shock in a vice and Remove the line, you will be fine (and wear gloves safety googles please)

As long as you bleed the nitrogen from the canister first you should be good. They are referring mainly to the charge nitrogen posing a hazard. Due to it being thirty years old I doubt there is any left but if there is just make sure not to breath any of it and drain it in a well ventilated area. After that you should be able to do as daveytz250s stated to remove the spring.

The easiest & fastest way to remove a rear shock spring when it can't be removed by the spring preload collars is a spring compressor tool like this-

No problem, Note- put a small piece of 3/8" fuel line hose, slit down the side to protect the shock shaft.
