View Full Version : Building my first 86 Tecate

3 Wheel Drive

It all started from lurking the classifieds for a long time, I picked up an 86 NOS in the bag rear fenders for around 250.00 shipped. At first my plan was to sit on them and cash out when supply and demand was in my favor.:D

Ive been piecing together an 85 Tecate for some time now and ended up swapping out the front end with an 86 front. So I've got the entire front end including a real nice OEM front fender.
9114 9011 5981 5098 7413 59 so I pick up the engine and a frame! They should arrive sometime tomorrow, this weekend I scored a grip of misc small parts and pieces.

Now on EBay I picked up a polished 86 T3 tank for around 60.00 and a high flight seat cover and foam. I plan on getting those new aluminum rads and some aftermarket shrouds. I'll have some assembly questions here and there. I'm going with a new DG exhaust and an fmf universal silencer.

Heres what I've got so far:

For now I'm going to run my +6" Laegars swing arm from an 85 Tecate that I got for peanuts...lol! It's got a new +4" Durablue axle with the trx250r splines. My frame will get powdered silver or white I'm not sure yet. I'm still looking for an Airbox and a few other parts.

Nice parts to start with. I'm about to embark on my first second gen tecate project, but mine will be about half the engine size as yours.

3WD love that seat color/pattern, would look good with either color choice. Do you know a silver powder coat for the Kawasaki's. The place i wanted to use has one silver choice and that is silver.
Silver pc code or name anyone? Also on my first.

Accidentally hit dislike I guess.
What is a close silver powder coat for the Kawasaki's? Code or name?

Stock the 86 does not have a release lever for the seat or the fenders. I am going to try to find a way to release the fenders easily without welding on the frame because it is definitely a pain to remove the seat/fender. I am not familiar with the 85 and older tecate.

Dont by the Ebay ones. Its a guy selling them from DC. Save the extra dollars and get them From DC direct.

I kick myself for not getting Hornets. But i "had" to have the white ones lol.

Nice score on the igniters. I've been looking for one of those. If your looking to unload one of those let me know.

QUOTE=3 Wheel Drive;1357363]A few parts arrived in the mail - Im still looking for a complete air box, and a few misc parts. There are some aftermarket shrouds on eBay for around $70.00. Are they any good? I heard hornetpowersports sells nice shrouds for the 86 Tecate, I want to find some to use on mine.

Here are the shrouds on ebay: http://m.ebay.com/itm/271065453748?nav=SEARCH

Yep, he is still out west but can make arrangements for me to pick up a 2nd. set if needed
(I had a couple of PM's about them all of a sudden). He also make a awesome oem in all regards head light shroud. Just wanted to mention that since it is often over looked.
110 shipped state side for his shrouds and here is a picture of them. Also put up a picture of what I have on hand/do.
That is the only coolant bottle I have left but will be spinning some more in stock version next week. That one pictured has copper inlay on the lettering and glows in the dark.
Frame caps, chain sliders, intake boot, KIPS, handle bar clamp covers (that are 87 T-3 specific but may interest you ? ) , custom stock fly wheel upgrade.
I have a small pile of detail work to do in the garage tomorrow with the flywheels (on the lathe) and trimming of intake boots so that is why the parts looked not ready yet.
Seems like me or the Mrs. dose something else 86/87 Tecate,,, darned if I can recall what though ???

I've got 2 seat pans, 1 high flight seat cover & foam, some old rubber dampers and some NOS ones too.
So I will get another seat foam and cover, looking for another pair of hooks..... What else do I need to rebuild my seats?

I suppose this is a good time to look at a service manual eh? Lol!

212911212912212913

Will basic bolts and washers work or am I missing something here?

the seat bolt studs are attached to little square plates. probably so bolts dont spin. So weld some bolts to some plate steel strips?

Seats also have 2 round larger rubber bumpers at front I think.

Some say the rear hubs are plated.

The 87 had an extra key on/off kill switch, no electric start. Kinda like a LT250R if you've seen that setup. Without the key in the on position it doesnt start or you just take it off and touch the 2 wires together and start it. High tech theft security.

pictures of the differences:
http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/120783-Differences-between-tecate-86-and-87-by-pics

Doesnt the 87 carrier look different with the brake in a different position?
Partzilla says carrier only used on 87.

I finally got my +6" Leagers swing arm worked on today, it had a hairline crack on the small factory welds in the rear. I had the iron workers repair the old welds at work. It turned out much better than before - the new welds are larger & look nice.

I also had my oem headlight frame rewelded at the same time. I'm surprised how small the factory welds were to begin with, my frame was nearly falling apart. After work the blasters called and said my 2nd batch of parts was ready for pick up. They even blasted my swing arm before I left.

Also recieved over 2 kilos of Micky Dunlaps - Team Green powder to get the ball rolling.:beer

On monday Im bringing in around 40+ pounds of nut, bolts, washers, springs n stuff to get replated. When I did my Tri Z restoration I used a combination of rusty oem bolts & one of those chrome bolt kits from ebay. I'm going the extra mile for the Tecates. I got a mixed bag of silicone plugs to keep the powder out of the threads. Plugging your own holes on everything ensures that you won't have to waste time chasing/tapping holes that get filled with unwanted powder coat. They are also reusable and inexpensive.

My rear axles I have were c/rusty & painted up thick. I'm working on getting them pulled apart now. One hub was heavily rusted so I soaked it in vinager for 24hrs. It cleaned up good then I soaked it in marvelous mystery oil, it came apart real easy. The is hub is still stuck, it's been soaking in oil for a while, im keeping pressure on it in my press.

The Tecates may get completed a little later than I would like. Mainly because I have started work on my newly acquired 74 Barracuda.

I finally got my rusty rear axles taken apart! The wheel hub & nut were rusted very badly, I wish I had a before pic. I soaked it in vinager for 2 days cleaning it after 24hrs. Used a wire brush & paper towels to get the grime off and kept soaking them.

I also soaked a bunch of springs washers & nuts & bolts too. These items can now be sent to the metal finisher for plating. I visited a few metal finishers locally- they did not want to help me out. There excuse was in the past customers were unhappy with the results & it would take too much time to clean the threads....etc... Etc...

I contacted FlyingW on the boards here & he's going to help me get my parts replated! :beer

No they are not.
If you take the entire system they can be swapped however.
You'll need the shock and the link system to make the swap.

I had a metal finisher do these parts - cost me $400.00! They turned out prett good. I wanted to plate the foot pegs because powder coat on my other pegs get worn off pretty fast. It looks I like the shop lost one of my seat u bolt fastners... I'll call them in the morning. That is an 85 Tecate grab bar, I tried my 85 6 pack rack & it does not work with the fenders- just does not look good at all.

They would finish all my bolts, washers & springs for $2,000.00!

Yeah the reason i asked is i`m looking for a +6-+8 `86 t3 swingarm and wondered if the `85 style would interchange . Went on Leagers site and they only make it for YFZ 450 @ 1,150 a pop thats a i`ll rich for my blood......nice piece !

If you are telling me the pic you posted is what you had plated for $400 we really need to talk, that's horrible man, I live in downtown chicago, where prices are high, I had every nut and bolt off of an 86 Tecate plated for $200 plus the front and rear brake rotor, chain hub, rear brake hub, axle, all axle hardware. plus rear rim hubs, front axle god knows what else...

That's correct 400.00 for those parts in the pic. I'm going to send the rest of my parts to FlyingW he's going to help me out with his metal finisher. I'm sending him 2 rear axles, & all the rest of my 86 Tecate parts. I'm not sure why the finishers charge as much as they do here in WA.

I may try a few places in Seattle before I send my parts out. But what a waste of time driving all around if they say the same thing as before.

Here it is a 12 piece replacement 1986 Tecate KXT 3 sticker kit. At no extra charge for you guys that use black plastic or white plastics I can alter the colors to your liking and if you run big or motors I can change all of the 250's to whatever size motor you have have at no charge. I don't have the exact pricing on this kit yet but I will let everybody know next week. Thanks for looking and if you have any questions feel free to PM me I miss a lot of the post responses so please PM me if you have any questions.

The have some similarities: the carriers are the same size - you can put an 86 carrier in the 1985 swing arm. If you do this you will need to use everything with the carrier like axle, brakes, hubs, & tires.

They both are the same size at the swing arm bolt. So you can use the aluminum 1986 swing arm on the 85 provided you also use the 86 (rocker arm) shock thingy. The 85 mounting tabs for the shock are centered on the swing arm, the 86 are slightly offset.

215363215364215368

In the second pic you can see the 85 swinger holds the 86 carrier perfect & vice-versa. Just out of curiosity I measured my 85 dura blue axle to see what it is over 86 stock rear axle. It's 3 3/4" longer than the 86.

Hey is it possible to put an 86 axle in an 84 carrier if you change the bearings in it?

I had considered doing the reverse, but I think it is possible. If so, you would also need the 86 spacer tube if it is. I have an extra spacer tube if you get the 86 size bearings and see if they work in the 84/85 carrier. It may be possible.

Does the T4 Swingarm fit the 86 T3? The carrier is nice on the T4 to adjust length.

If one as tried, I can tried it in the next few weeks.

I have access to a nice sandblasting set up at work. For the vast majority of the small parts like bolts, washers and what ever else is small enough to be pita to hold while sand blasting I used this "pond skimmer" thing with a threaded adapter to hang onto.

What is the spacer tube. Im still new to this bike.

The spacer tube is a small metal tube in between the rear carrier bearings. It keeps the rear axle held in place between the bearings inside the carrier.

As long as the rotor sits in the same spot with this carrier it should work. I believe the rotors are same in diameter

I'm thinking about pulling the plug on my Tecate Projects. I dont have the time to ride or build them much anymore. I have at least 2 or more of most everything to complete the builds. Lots of parts have been powder coated, some of them have been zinc plated, there are many extra parts as you can see in the previous posts in the this thread.

I may consider selling one project or possibly all of it together. I'm not in any type of financial bind, so I will not be selling parts at this time. I don't have time to reply to everyone or package & mail many items.

Some things I don't have are complete 86 rear shocks or 86 grab bars, besides those 2 items there should be enough parts to complete 2 tecates.

I will get back to those with serious interest in all of these parts or a substantial offer on a project. I may change my mind on this & decide to keep it all but for now I'll see how it goes.

I will try to take inventory of everything Ive got, theres lots of electronics and small stuff to go through. Last year I bought almost 10 large plastic totes of NW Riders 86 Tecate stash.

One 1985 Tecate frame w/ WA State title
Two 1986 Tecate frames "No Vin Numbers" I had the frames sand blasted & powdered. The vins were not even visable before sand blasting. One frame was welded under the seat (green one).

None of this will be cheap, I bought most of it in bulk or piece by piece, I always paid buyers asking prices including shipping fees etc with out haggling, im not cheap. Theres more parts I have not listed some pieces are chromed, most everything is in very good condition.

If I have not responded to a PM be patient, many of these parts are in storage so this will take time. Remember Im not selling parts- those PM's will be ignored.
