big red plow rehab thread?

bought this plow off a member a few years ago. Getting around to doing something with it. had to make some mounting brackets as it didnt come with any. stick welded them up with some 3/32 7018. Got it mounted but it doesnt lift high enough. ? for you guys with plows. Will shortening the chain remedy this or will extending the rear tabs on the plow be a better option(obviously alot more work). There is alot of slop on the cross brace/lift mech that is causing some lift loss. you can see by the pics how much it needs to come up. need to figure how to secure at pivot points, was thinking of welding a tab or pin on the back of the plow and just notching the angle iron brace on the frame and pinning it. Gonna need a bit of work, but seems worth fixing. It is a cool design how you can completely brake it down. tubing is heavy wall.

have to mill over some ideas. May completely redo the lift handle and cross brace if this one is beyond rehab. Any ideas are welcome.

I wonder if relocating the hinge mounting tab on the lift arm further up might give you a greater amount of lift. Not trying to sound insulting, but it looks like the current geometry of the lift hinge may be a bit less than ideal.

i have thought about that as well. Not insulted, i didnt design it, just trying to make it work! It lifts and lowers easily, just not high enough.

Looks like something could be shortened/moved or changed otherwise very easy. I just don't have it in front of me......

Lengthen the upper arm on the plow lift lock thing. Had to do that to mine. Increases the amount it has to lift for that Lock to cam over. It is counter intuitive. But it worked for me

just about got all the fab work done on this. I ended up making a new lift mechanism to replace the old worn out one. mine is alot beefier. Still have to figure out the handle angle and the rest of the lock piece. Also fabbed up a double spring pin for holding the plow straight and at angles both ways. My original plan of pinning it at angle to the frame was out the door when i realized the plow must pivot if you hit something (doh!) Gotta get the edge on the plow yet which i already have drilled. gotta cut and taper the custom double pin once I figure out the ideal length. a little paint on the new parts and hopefully i will be using it for this wopper of a storm. a bit under the gun, unfortunatly the rest has to kinda be done out in the garage with the 3 wheeler present, and it is cold as all hell out there. hopefully get it on and functional some time tomorow. Photo bucket is down for maintanance. Get some pics up as soon as i can. Check back if your interested.
