On the Honda 185/200 series engines, how different are the spark advancers across different models? They are listed as several different part numbers, yet all look/function the same. Some are discontinued, others are still available. I'm considering buying a new one for a 185s to use on my 200es but would like some insight before i pull the trigger on it. I also plan on taking this new one, and sourcing some springs and buying a 5lb box of them. lol.

the 200s/es/e/x are the same and i believe the 185s model is the same as the 200 ones.
if in doubt, get a good used 200 one.

About the only difference I've run into are the plugs. If they are the same, they all should work, just fine.

thanks guys ill swap a 185s one in just to be sure before i go buying one. any idea on the springs? I really hate buying something when what i have is fine minus some .05 cent springs.

springs will be the same.
make sure if you dissamble it, you re-assembl it corectly. the line on the rotor sould aling to fairly close to the line on the pickup when everything is set to TDC if not your 180* out. (nope never done that... /me whistles )

If you order the springs for a late 90s XR200. The springs fit perfectly. They are even the same part number as the ones for the 185, and 200s. All of the computers show them as discontinued for the three wheelers, however they still list them with the exact same part number for the XR200.

Thanks for that info! I see a lot of "discontinued" parts that look like a direct fit. The base with the oil seal, the cover, the whole top end for that matter. All this looking at parts fiches got me thinking of CRF230 hybrids and whatnot...which is good, but XR parts are a dime a dozen and CRF parts arent. But id love to see that done on a 200x or auto bottom end the CRF makes such smooth usuable power.

Yeah that would be very easy to do i should scribe it anyway for future reference cause i'm a lot better at taking stuff apart than getting it back together lol.

Personally I have 125m weights and custom made springs on my 200m and it runs perfectly. however if I would have known about the xr200r springs and weights I would have purchased those.
