My 83 200x kickstarter has not always been engaging the engine to actually spin it. whats involved in taking it apart? pain to find parts for it? anything to look for?
Thanks

I don't have a 200x but that sounds like the one way bearing. You should have to remove the right side cover so get a new gasket as well.

You have to split the cases on a 200x to fix the kicker. A slipping kicker is a common problem on the first gens.

The 1983's had several kicker issues. They had gear breakage issues, as well as issues with the ramps on the kicker ratchet wearing down (sounds like your issue). Be careful swapping parts, though. Honda made several changes during the first gen years 83-85. The pair of gears in the clutch cover changed after 83, and the gears inside the cases changed 3 times. The teeth on the internal gears changed between 83 and 84, and the gears got wider for 85, with a subsequent change to a narrower clutch bearing and a different first gear in the transmission to accommodate the wider kick gears. It will all interchange if you are very careful as to which parts you are using. I presently have the '85 first gear, kicker gears, and clutch bearing in my '84 cases.

If you do split the cases to fix it, consider swapping on an ATC185/200S or an XR/XL185-200 head. They have the same ports and valves, but they have a compression release. I did this to my 200X, so I can take a little stress off my kicker gears and avoid the issue in the future.

Is there someone who deals in the 83 kick starter gears and parts here on the board? Or is that more of and ebay type project?

I have a kicker gear set and shaft. I know nothing of the history of it, but it "looks good". It was in a box of parts I bought for a few gears I needed. $75 shipped and it's yours. pm me with any interest.

Done a couple of these and getting ready to do another one. If I were you I would find the parts numbers that you need and start calling shops/finding leads on OEM NOS parts. Its heartbreaking to do all of that work just to find you have to do it again.

you need to have the gears back cut, add a swapper on the kicker spring stretch it reinstall and go on with life. Its the only option anymore since kicker fix kits are totally rare. I did this to a decently built motor and no more issues.

Let the member above you handle this. He know someone that did my set and I was very happy.

It's been an issue since the 200x was created. Here is a TSB from 1986.
