hi my name is Derek im a new member here from Calgary Alberta. I picked up a 1984 Big red about a month ago and I've been going hard to get this Relic back to life! 206094
after a few hours of getting it home I already had it torn down to see what I was working with. the bike was actually in really good shape. mostly just small things like maintenance
206095
I removed all the racks and rust-morted them then sprayed them in a black enamel. this gave the bike a completely different look after about 3 hours of work. sure paid off.

as you can see in the pics the seat was pretty bad. I brought it in the house and recovered it with a black high quality vinyl.
206098
the last thing on the cosmetic list really was the plastics. they were in great shape but scratched up bad and faded. I cleaned them off with a wax remover and wet sanded them down with 240-400-600-800-1200 then gave them a polish with the power polisher and a bunch of different compounds. they actually came up really nice. they almost look new.

SOO!! this thing turned out great! its looks awesome. so I head out to a close area to town here to take it for its first voyage. every time I started the bike it smoke like a mother!!. I knew right away it needed valve seals. it didn't smoke under load or after running for 5 min. so I took it around got the feel for it and went through the gears. felts great and ran good. so on the truck it went and took it home. I noticed right away I had to pull the motor out to get the head off.
so I guess its getting a new top end.
I ordered
-timing chain
-valves
-.50 over piston
-engine gasket kit
-carb kit
206102
I tore the motor down and there was a pretty good ring gap and the piston had about .20 play.
off the the machine shop I went to get it bored and cross hatched,
206103
206104
after filing down the rings I installed the piston into the jug and the fit couldn't have been better.
I moved onto the cylinder head. the inside of the intake and exhaust port are really rough and could be WAY smoother. I took the dremil and very carefully smoothed down all the rough edges. this small port job should help in the long run.206105
then it was lapping the new valves into the seats and putting the new valve seals on (THE WHOLE REASON IN TOOK IT APART)
this is the complete motor. with a fresh rebuild.

I was in the garage tonight and figured I would start playing with some metal...I cut out a small piece of metel and bent up a dash. this will hold my cylinder head temp gauge and my light switches. 206107206108
that should look good up top. I had my parts bike up and was looking at the bottom. there was so much area for stuff to get in there and hit the motor or interfere with the shifter... so I made a template and started fabbing up a skid plate. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS. I think it looks pretty cool. im not done yet but will show it off when done,
