I am running a 400ex carrier in an 86 swingarm with a trx axle.

Is it the camera angle or an illusion that the 85 carrier is shorter shoulder to shoulder overall length adding to the differences. A picture of the two axles showing axle bearing fits lined up including disc brake splines and snap ring groves might be helpful.

I maybe wrong, but if the '85 is shorter than will the '85 350x axle fit?

"Steve" with you using a 400EX carrier, than as addition option the could 400EX axle be used, yes I know the hub splines are different?

Steve, an awesome comparison, thank you. Hopefully you linked this in the other thread for Poco to see. He's currently watching paint dry.

Steve, how about one more pic and a measurement. Show another pic further along the axles showing snap ring grooves and could you give me measurement length from the hub/bearing/seal shoulder to the snap ring groove on both?

Ya I see this and it covers what I was saying. Im glad were all on the same page now. Now you see what Im talking about.

The 86 axle inside of the 85 carrier, you can see the offset of the sprocket. Its off quite a bit. My suspisions have been confermed. Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the pics.If the sprockets were attached to the same sides (Left or outside) of the sprocket hub, then yes, the sprockets would be out of alignment. If you look closely at Steve's last pic of the axles, you'll see that the '86 axle's sprocket hub is offset to the left, but the sprocket bolts onto the Right (inside) of the hub, which keeps the sprockets in perfect alignment.

The sprocket bolts to the outside of the 85 hub and to inside of the 86 hub. I will get pics today with sprockets on so you can see that in fact they put the sprocket in the same place.

Ive got a race friend I race against. He rides a 85, it has an 86 axle in it. The sprocket was offset. I'll see if i can get him to chime in. #388 in so cal. Really fast guy. Hes lived this 1st hand. Harry Jr. knows him, harrys at alot of our races.

I serviced my carrier this morning and slid in the 86 axle. Only a 3/16" offset differance. Id run that. You were right, they do interchange. Not a perfect match though , but i wouldnt be afraid to run it. I did learn the differances between the two years 1st hand. Your never too old to learn something

I'm glad we're all on the same page now, but to be honest, I didn't expect there to be any offset differences, based on what I read on Durablue's & LSR's websites. Thanks for the info Poco.
