Hi Guys,

A while back I had a liquid cooled '85 250R that I really liked alot. Like an idiot, I sold it a while back and have missed it since.

Not far from my house, an air cooled '84 250R has popped up for sale and I wanted to get thoughts on it; not being over familiar with the older generation 250R's. This particular 84 looks exceptionally clean with original plastic and very stock which appeals to me. How does it compare to the 85 that I'm used to? I imagine it won't be quite as powerful, but will the difference in power feel significant?

Does the 84 have a 5 speed or 6 speed trans?

Generally, are the air cooled 250R's good machines?

The best the seller is willing to do on it is $900. I know the liquid cooled 250R's bring a bit more...but does $900 sound like it's in the ball park?

Thanks in advance for any input.

From the description I'm not sure why you are sitting here typing. Go get it.

The 84r will have smaller diameter forks, so they will bend easier, they have around 8 inches of travel front and rear VS 9.8 front and rear on the liquid r.

Power difference is huge. I have an 84 with DG pipe and silencer, boyesen reeds, UNI air filter with drilled air box. And it has ok power, but not compared to a liquid r.

The 84 has a 5 speed transmission.
In my opinion if there jetted right, and maintenance is done, and the motor is in decent shape, the air cooled motor will last a long time. Not as long as a liquid cooled 250r though.

Hope this helps.

I'd buy it. Original fenders, clean, stock... worth every penny.

Sounds like the going rate for a clean Aircooled 250r. Very reliable motor, makes good power, liquid R makes more power stock vs stock. I would buy it. Had an 84 that I liked over my 85 liquid R, but that could be cause the 84 always ran great and the 85 would always have issues, but I would say buy the 84 if its clean.

Thanks Guys, I do appreciate the input.

I'll make arrangements this week to take a look at it and will look forward to posting some pictures if it follows me home. Fingers crossed..
