wow an 88. i see why u wana save it. u could try a heat gun and very slowly try to peel . but if it was me id mask it off and tell the bead blasters to stay away from there and sand paper up to it. gona be the safest way.

If they aren't available. I bet blue27 could do it. But I also know he is a very busy man. Lots of heat and patience to ATTEMPT to get it off :(

Too much heat will damage at least some decals/stickers. If you go that way, be careful!

I'd take a few pics of it and email blue27. You don't want a dirty old sticker back on your freshly painted frame. Let Bruce make a new one.
If you really want to save it or any other stickers for that matter, get a razor blade and laquer thinner (paint remover) mineral spirits, etc....
simply pour on and around the sticker, I usually pick under the sticker with the razor blade to start. The thinner will loosen the glue, work the sticker off slowly, peel it back while applying thinner.
I keep thinner in a small plastic bottle from the drug store, makes it easier to apply small amounts.

ok cheers for the input guys i will strip the rest of it down & see what the frame is like before i start getting people to make stuff for it.
its a very rusty machine & it might not be worth saving even though its a 88 :(

I'll try to get one off a junker and let you know how it goes.
If it was me?
That sticker is so rare, I'd leave it perfectly ugly.

the more I'm stripping it down the more i think the frame won't be worth saving. i will probably send it away to a specialist to let them clean it up, it looks like its been sat in the sea for 10 years!
