Tecate Short Track Style...

This one of Jimmy White's 85 KXTs. Look at the steering lock on this trike! unbelievable! you can also see the Kawasaki Short Track Gas Tank. I don't know if they were ever available to the public. The JWR manual tells you how to move the stock tank backwards and grind the steering stops for more lock.

the tank on that machine was aluminum, I raced the tecates when they were new and was fortunate enough to get some of the team green stuff(or see it) they machined a buttload off the triples to get the lock.(they were stock parts) and you could get that tank(big $, like 975 as i recall) but i think that some guys were using tanks from a bike(oder kdx or something like that)

Cool! Thanks for the info Nick! I posted some old race pics before christmas. there was a KXT 125 that had what looked like a KDX tank.

Jeb, That tank is probably painted aluminum. Check out my pic from The Miami National in 1985.

I'm drooling over that Tecate! Added the KDX tank and shaved steering locks to the wish/mod list. Jeb ,could you post exactly how you would move back the stock tank? Thanks!

I can't believe I didn't remember! It took me reading through my JWR manual this evening to refresh my memory!

Like Nick already said, the tank on the JW trike is aluminum and was made by Cal-Fab! It's spec'd in the manual as required equipment to obtain the maximum steering lock. The other way is just "increased" lock, where you space the stock tank backwards 3/8" and grind the steering stops just far enough to keep the forks from hitting the tank.

BigGreenMachine, basically you take the gas tank mounts off and make a 3/8" spacer for each out of aluminum. then get some longer bolts and put the gas tank mounts back on with the spacers between them and the stock tank. Since this moves the tank backwards,you must trim the bracket on the frame that the front of the rear fender bolts to so it will clear the gas tank. Then grind the steering stops on the frame so the forks will travel as far as possible from side to side without hitting the tank.

Of course, these mods are for closed course competition only!! :D

If the plastic honda short track kit goes for over $500 on ebay, I'd hate to see what the Cal-Fab Tecate short track tank would bring!

theres probrably a whole bunch of old, corroded Cal-Fab aluminum gas tanks on old tecates in scrap piles... :(

Getting ready to grind the stops down and move back the tank. Just to make sure, it won't matter if I grind the stops completely off?

The manual says to grind them back just enough to keep the forks from hitting the tank. I don't think I'd grind them all the way off. take small cuts and walk in on it.

I took a small cut alright lol, cut them off almost flush then ground them down smooth. Used some 1/2 inch spacer cut to the shape of the rubber mounts and moved the tank back. Works great and looks very nice crossed up like it is with the old UFO plate on it.

On another note NICKG said he has an old Cal-Fab tank stored away, would really like to see some pics of that.
