Let's talk tires

The time has come for me to replace the tires on my 84 200es.

I loved my Carlisle Knobbys but there are so many tire options I wanted some opinions.

I saw the few places that offer the solid knobby list it as a 2 ply. I swore mine were 4 ply.

Tips, suggestions?

most knobby tires are two ply I like my dura knobies on my 125m and I also like my Carlisle Knobby on the front of my 200m. id go for the dura Knobies they are the cheapest.

I am contemplating new tires for my YTM200e, I looked a bear claws because I would like a nice mud tire, but I imagine they would be a rough ride on a hard tail.
I'm leaning toward nobbies right now... what other balloon tire options are there for a hardtail?
Are something like the cheng shin lumberjacks/duro mud & sand/ nancos good for a hard tail?

I have lumberjacks on the machine now. I have been happy with them but find they tear up my lawn a bit much. Thus why I am considering the knobbys. I prefer the balloon look as I feel that is what really makes these machines different.

Not all knobbies are the same. On my klt 110 I have a both a duro knobby and cheng shin knobby on the back, both 22-11-8. The duro knobby is shorter and wider while the cheng shin is taller and narrower. I prefer the cheng shin as it offer more side wall flex for a smoother ride on the hard tail. Also if I pull a wheelie in snow my 110 will pull right every time due to the difference in size between the rears.
Just something to consider when looking at knobbies.

I too like knobbies. They're not very good in mud, but after several incidents of cleaning my trike for twice as long as I spent actually riding in the mud, I've got most of the mud riding out of my system. The majority of my riding is on grass or hard pack dirt. Oh, and gravel, because you can't get anywhere in Iowa without driving on gravel. Puncture resistance is not very good, I'm afraid. I have used quite a few Cheng Shin C827s, and they have a classic balloon tire ride, but not very good wearability. That's a 2-ply for you. Of course, they're much lighter, so that can be an advantage. I've got Kenda Scorpions on my 225DX and I personally think they're hard as a rock. I'd put OEM tires on it if I could, but I think the Dunlops that came on the 225DX are long gone and nothing similar is available. Never tried Duros myself, so I can't say anything one way or another about those.

Neither the duro nor cheng shin will be ultra tough compared to say a bearclaw when it comes to puncture resistance. It's the trade off of ballon tire cushy ride vs durability. It will basically come down to what your prefer and your riding characteristics. I don't have a problem putting plugs in my tires if I get a puncture, they work well.

Where are the best deals on new tires? 25x12x9... knobbys... anyone know? I typically use rocky mtn or bike bandit.

I like my Swamp lites on my ytm200el. 22 by 11 on a nine inch rim with an inch deep tread. They might not ride the smoothest but they won't ever wear out. they got me through the mud at trikefest this year so I was glad I had them.

Rocky Mountain doesn't have an option for a tire/wheel combo build for a '84 200ES, or anything with a 25x12x9 tire and a 9x9 rim with a 4x150 bolt pattern that I can find. GRRRRR. The 200M and the 200ES Big Red both use this tire/wheel size so looks like I may have to call them to get a price if they offer a combo build pkg.

If only they made Black Mambas in a 25x12x9....might not be a good front tire choice though and theyre cost prohibitive. Knobbies and Wooly Boogers are best for hardtails/utility trikes imo
