vavles probably knocking on your piston. take it to a shop and have them adjusted before something gets ruined

Theh ticking is either maladjusted comprerssion release cable, or loosly adjusted rockers. It's not valves hitting the piston! If it were, it wouldn't be running after the first few seconds!

if your comp. release wasn't adjusted right, then you should see the cable moving somewhat. when the valve goes up, it may tap it. it is more likely your vavle tappets being off. i just got this fixed yesterday on my 225dr. you have to take the valve cover off, and measure the clearance with those gap measurers. not sure what the clearance is on a 350x. i set mine at .012, or .015. check both the exhaust and intake valves. also, when you first start it up, it may tick, but give it a minute so oil can reach the head.

I had a clicking sound coming from my 350 x once. You could only hear it if you rode up a steep hill and turned around on the hillside. Turned out to be a rod bearing going bad. I found that out when the engine locked up about 2 months later. I should of fixed it right away  but I had no idea it was the rod bearing making the noise. I found out the hard way that you can't change the oil and clean the air filters in these machines often enough. I'm not saying that I think your noise is a bearing but it could be. I'm also a firm believer in keeping fresh bearings in these bikes. I have lost a 350x and a 85 250r engine to rod bearing failure. The 250r didn't even make any noise before it failed. Both times happened on wide open straight aways.

may be the cam chain has reached its tensioner limit, does it do it when cold? or just when hot.

I would check the valve clearence first with a feeler guage and compare it to the correct amount in the service manual before the motor is tore down.
