I'm finally trying to get my Z running but the kick starter is binding and won't kick all the way over. It will kick until it builds compression, then bind. Then I can try again and it will kick until it builds compression again.
I looked it up online and saw that a missing shim in the kicker assy can make it bind. Which shim is it? I'm assuming that it's a washer by looking at the parts fishe.

Not a shim but a thrust washer. I don't have a Z engine in front of me but you should be able to pull that shaft in and out with just a hair of play, allot may mean worn components or a missing thrust washer.
Sure it's the kicker? Not an engine issue?? Try to tun it over by the crank (stator side, unless it's apart) and pull the plug out and make sure it's the right length plug too.
Idk if the Z has dots to line up, but it should as the proper return spring pre-load is a set spec.
Thats all I've got......

There's about 5mm play in the shaft so I'd say the washer is missing. I'll take it apart and see for sure. I can't turn it over by the flywheel either. If I back the plug out I can turn it easy but the plug is a b8es.

the plug it the right one, same as I am using in mine. drain the tranny oil out with the drain plug on the bottom of the motor and pull the clutch cover off. you have to remove the foot peg and the radiator hoses. Yo also have to remove the kicker, but hold the kicker shaft in place when you take the clutch cover off. here's a pic of what the internal gears look like for the kicker. 197264

Thanks for the pic muthey. I got this Z in a pile of parts a few years ago and the kicker assy was missing so I got it from eBay.
I stripped it down completely and went through the motor completely and rebuilt the top end. So the missing thrust washer should be in the actual kick shaft right? I'm at work all night so I can't look at it til tomorrow.
edit: #12 or #4?

I would check on part 13, 12, or 4 any one of them missing could cause problems with spacing which is the reason they are there.

Part #12 is there

Part #4 is there

The flywheel turns freely with the spark plug backed out.
Part #13 is missing and I can stick a washer in there but I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make. I wouldn't think that there would be too much side load on that shaft.
Do you have the proper gasket on the small kicker cover? They will bind up without that gasket. You should still be able to roll it over with the plug in..sounds odd.

I made that gasket material since I couldn't find a gasket kit. Figured I'd make that gasket, clutch side gasket and stator cover gasket.
It won't turn over by hand at all. Not even close. When kicking, it stops but will kick on over once the compression bleeds off.

I see a bunch of rust in those gears?
4/8/12/13 ??
Something simple going on. Why do you say "flywheel turns freely with the plug backed out"?? Got a rusty bearing in there??

I put this motor together with new crank bearings not quite a year ago. I noticed that rust when I took the kicker cover off too. Its been sitting since this past winter but the kicker cover was on.
I said that it would turn by hand on the flywheel with the plug removed to rule out a crank bearing etc.
