Hey,

EDIT: NVM. Overreacted a bit.. A little bit of WD-40 and you can peal it all off in one piece.

So everywhere I see people mentioning that the oil pump gasket should be replaced on a rebuild.

Well, I just got to this part finally and looked at it. It is a very small paper gasket and there is absolutely no way this is coming out clean. Meaning I will have scrape it, which surely will result in to the machined surface. The gasket that is already on there looks really good and if possible, I would like to leave it, instead of replacing it.

My question is: How important is it to replace the oil pump gasket?

If it is important, is there some trick to get the gasket off cleanly? I had a hell of a time with the crankcase halve gaskets..

Thanks in advance,
Nate

Gaskets!!!! No problem. Get yourself a right angle air motor like this.

Next buy a Roloc holder, 2" like this

And finally buy a box of 3M Roloc disks, 2" BLUE. I use the blues for removing gasket materials. The key is to hold the air motor and a slight angle and LIGHTLY go over the surface NOT applying hardly any pressure. Let the disk do the work. Don't dwell in any area. Keep the disk moving. These disks are aggressive and they WILL remove metal. Simply flash the area. A box of disks is about 30 bucks, the disk holder is about 15 bucks, and an air motor is about 30 bucks. All can be had at most Harbor Freight stores or on Ebay. Get a variable speed air motor. You can get sanding disks for these as well in different grits. The Scotchbrite pads come in different grits too. Brown (course) Red (Medium), and Blue (Fine). The sanding disks come the same way with other colors. Search 3M Roloc and you will find all kinds of info. I use the 2" all the time. Extremely useful for so many things. I can cleanup and entire motor's gasket surfaces in about 5 minutes. If done right, leaves a ever so slightly textured surface which is perfect for a gasket seal. The Scotchbrite disks are excellent for removing paint, rust, corrosion, deburring a rough edge and the list goes on. The disks come 2" or 3" but its best to get the holder for the disk size you're using. The disks are 1/4 turn on and off. Trust me, you will find many many uses.

Ok, I decided to try to get it off in your post.

Sprayed a bit of WD-40 on it and let it soak for 10 minutes. Came back and it pulled off in one piece...no chunks left over.
