Changing 250sx shaft boot. Help!

So I had a buddy take a big screwdriver and push back on the spring loaded part thinking it would separate from the part it slides over but it doesn't go back far enough. I've searched and read other threads but what am I missing? I thought it should go back far enough I can slip the old boot off and new boot on? Do I need to have the rear end on jack stands so I can spin the wheels or something?

Remove swingarm pivot bolt on the right and seperate frame from swingarm

Yes,maybe need to remove brake cable but I think it can be done without
