I got my reeds in today for my 82 125 Yamaha I went to install but the holes are to far apart on the new reeds the number was 603 boyesen so is my cage or motor an 83 and how do I tell without ordering more for an 83?

whats the vin on the motor?
1980 - 1984 have a 9 digit serial number for the engine/frame. They will match, unless someone has changed the engine. VIN decoders will not work.

1985~ - 9 digit on engine, 15 digit on frame. You can use a VIN decoder to figure out the year, such as this.

As far the manuals list, 83,84,85 YT125's, all start with 21Y. The 85 has a 15 digit VIN. None of the manuals I have, show a cut off serial number between the 83 and 84 models. I use the decals (if possible) to tell the year. If someone has a 83 or 84 YT125 and it's starts with something other than 21Y, knows another/better way or if I made an error in this list,

I dont trust vins on the motors when it comes to matching reeds. There is basically 2 reed cage for these motors. The early and the late model. My 1980 125 had the late model. The cages interchange but the petals do not. If you have an address i can send you a set of reeds.
