I've modified a 85 200x with an air cooled xr500 motor. all is coming together smoothly but I need more clearance between the exhaust headers and front tire. I was thinking a slightly smaller tire, and longer forks. then I read some posts on leading and trailing axles, a leading axle might buy me some distance, but what will it do to the handling at high speeds, turning, and hard landings. any and all advice welcome

You could extend the front fork and it might give you the clearence. I wouldn't shrink the tire much if any. Not sure which forks you could swap for that would fit but I think TPC Trikes makes custom forks so you might try them.

Pics would help. You can just put your forks on opposite sides and flip them around to make it a leading axle setup. This should gain you quite a bit of clearance. The trail will be increased, and it will turn a bit "slower" than stock depending on the rake angle of the modified bike.
My street X has a dropped and flipped frontend, a ten inch wheel built by myself, and 21 inch tire.

I will definitely get some pics up soon. the rake hasn't changed its still what any atc200x is. Im gonna flip the forks and see what I gain that way. also any one have lead on complete rear brake setup, (master cylinder, caliper, and foot lever n linkage). and fuel tank (new or used) don't wanna pay arm and leg for any thing. ive heard the 250r had a couple years where they had 2 inche longer forks and were somewhere around 37 mm. and I would have to bore out the stock triples, which isnt a problem.
