View Full Version : MRSOUND First Gen 250R Tank Refinish

While reading MRSOUND's Maier group fender buy, I read he needed to get his 250R tank painted. So in the interest of doing some good for the neighborhood I reached out and asked if I could paint it and he agreed.
Two weeks ago I dropped off MRSOUND's 250R tank at my local blaster and had it stripped to bare metal.
Last weekend filled the five dings I could find on the tank and sprayed on some Epoxy base primer.
Yesterday, did some final skim coats followed by high build primer and then block sanded the tank for paint.
Got some single stage automotive grade urethane and painted it yesterday. It is hard to show white versus dark colors but the tank came out great. I will most likely wet/sand and buff to eliminate the orange peel and give it that mirror finish.
It is best to mask off the filler neck and the fuel valve so the owner does not have to deal with it, its all about the details.

Before pics, it was in pretty nice shape to start with. Hope he likes it.

WOW! :Bounce Looks awesome Mike! My deepest appreciation! :beerLike he said he reached out to me and I'm glad he did seeing it now. I have not had any work done from him before, but his reputation proceeded him so who was I to deny his offer. Definitely worth shipping it across the country. Again thanks! Can't wait to see it up close and personal.
After TF Blue27 will be employed for some custom decals for the next part of the transformation:twisted:

It will be a while, lol. I'm not a seasoned builder like a lot of guys on here. I started a build thread about 2 months ago with pics of everything tore down. Well everything is still tore down. And now Mr. Clean has set the bar high for the rest of the trike. Can't have superior specimen like that on a rat looking trike. I will update it with the tank and the white fenders when I get it back. But until after TF it won't be much activity.

That tank looks killer! How did you come up with the white color mix? Did you pick one they had, or did you try to match a Honda or Maier fender white? Excellent work.
Meh, could use a little work around the filler neck. Lol, beautiful job as always Mike.

90guy you have my contact information, if you want me to do the tank send it over.

I have a 2006 white Chevy Silverado, and I picked that paint code as it is a brilliant white and not an off white. I am hoping it will match up to the MRSOUND's Maier fenders. I have a white 250r front on my 200x and it looks really good next to it.

... I will most likely wet/sand and buff to eliminate the orange peel and give it that mirror finish ...
That, as you know, will look fantastic.
I'm a total hack and painted a 70 tank with Summit single stage red poly over SPI gray epoxy primer over some bondo/bodywork. Something in my settings wasn't right when I laid down the red and I got a lot of orange-peel. The wet sanding and buffing fixed it right up and it came out amazing.
I can't even see the orange peel in your pics. Should be outstanding.
And something about that GM white is so bright.
This was the tank - pictures don't do it justice:

I took the time and did wet sand and buff, could not get a worthy photo, but I do have these. Tank is on its way to MRSOUND. :beer

Started on 90guy's 250r tank.
Got it blasted and ready for filler, I will need to address the filler neck :Bounce as I mask it off to avoid getting medium inside the tank.
Glad to see your finally taking this filler neck thing seriously.

one thing I found that helps too is to take a razor blade and score around the filler neck. we have had a ton of tanks painted for my shop and once in a blue moon the gas vapors will get under the paint and bubble it up. I just do it as a precaution now since ive had it happen and it's not fun a pretty new painted tank

So....seeing the #7 from the fender, and the Fat Tire Bike in the REFLECTION of MRSOUND's tank is not a worthy photo? I beg to differ. :D
I need to get a damn blast cabinet, open blasting in the back yard aint cutting it anymore.
I think Todd (90guy) may have got a tire from me for this new project you are working on. Regardless if that's the same project or not, your thread might be a good place to mention that its SUPER cool to be a part of this whole community, and to watch everybody work together to build these wonderful machines!!!
Did you keep the tank I sent ya? Gonna paint that one too? I think you may have mentioned the Nicholsen project for that one, but I know how build plans can change.:D
It must add at least a tiny bit of stress knowing that your work for others is being publicly displayed for this many enthusiasts.
Excellent work and attention to detail Mr. Clean:beer

I do plan on using the tire on this project. Need to find a rim and some rear tires. But until I find what I want It will keep the rims and tires I bought from Mr. Clean. Defiantly excited to see this tank come bacK!

Looks nice Mr clean. It's alot of work to make it like glass. I probably have 40 hours into this tank with a few refreshments on the way. Keep up the good work. This is my second tank restore. 194923
