never seen one snap there yet. good catch hahahaha could have really hurt. Do you ride hard? Usually its the backbones that break on our R's, guess i need to start looking my frames over closer though

probably internal rust caused the weakness in that area,,, I think a new rust free frame is in order here,, the reat of the frame is probably the same way.....

HAVE ZERO CLUE HOW I DID THISI actually did most of the frame crack inspections and engineered repairs on the test bikes at Kawi [Makers of the fastest production 3 wheeler in the universe], and I have never seen an instantaneous catastrophic failure per se. All the cracks start small and get progressively bigger over a period of time. In other words, that started as a small crack like maybe 1/4" long. If you jumped it a lot it might have grown to around 1" or so in a few hours or more. From there it might only take a few hours more to break like it did.

It did not go from 0 to broken in half in just a few hours.

Regular close up inspections are a major safety precaution on a 25 year old dirt bike that has had the bejesus flogged out of it.

I suggest you look around the footpeg area also, they like to crack there if you land hard. Also the steering head. You need very good eyes to see them. The tiny ones look like ultra fine hairline cracks in the paint and it can be very tempting to talk ones self into thinking it is something other than s crack, lol.

Here in the "rust belt" that is common. I have seen a few crack in the same place.

+1 on getting a whole new frame, that one is gone.

Rust is definitely a contributing factor to these kinds of breaks. I've not had one crack there (yet) but I've got several broke up around the footpeg and swingarm pivot area almost like 350Xs are known for. That's about the 3rd or 4th one I've seen break in that area over the years though.

Triz had gone in the same place, salt water corrosion in the tubes.

Maybe it was ridden by this guy at one time? I get goosebumps every time I watch this.

I bet if you poured water over his head long enough his face would grow roots because he planted it

My brother-in-law's 250r frame broke in that same place but he was riding it. He was flying through the dunes pinned in 4th gear and he didn't see a 3-4 ft drop off and he went off it and he landed with the front wheel and snap! His frame was pretty solid before that, He was hurt (no broken bones) but he was sore.

Well, everything CAN be repaired. I myself would look for a clean West coast frame but the right man and the right welder can repair and reinforce that area.

I have seen the upper back tub (under your tank) break but any point can just give up.

Are you a bigger guy that jumps allot?? Poor suspension can harm a frame all the time if that is the case. Just blown out fork seals not fixed until they HAVE TO BE FIXED, can be a bad thing for the frame itself.

Kasey probably has a nice frame he'd part with; Seems to be a talented, fair and reasonable guy. Send him a PM if you wish.

But, DO NOT just throw 2 plates on it and weld it up if you want to fix rather than scrap it. It all must be cut out and a new down tube made up or chopped out of another 85/86R 250R.

I myself at a FAT 5'10"s 220lbs am quite surprised that I have a 350X with TRX450 linkage rear suspension that I designed and I have no gussets even on my own 350X frame!! It was just a time thing, I'll get to it but I'm amazed I haven't broke this late 86 350X with some OEM gusseting just yet........

If u aren't lucky to catch the crack in front in time it breaks taking the backbone out too. I've seen 4 broke this way because of the damp and salty climate I live in with salt oceans and salt on the road in the winter.193930.

Going to have it welded up and done right. Rest of the frame is money.

Mine broke in the same place several years ago. I also found it during a tear down. Mine was broken more straight across than yours. I plated it on all four sides and after grinding and repainting, it is practically invisible.

Still looking for a frame! Manbearpig is a no go. Says the swing arm bolt removal will damage the frame, I told him to cut it like I did.

I'm going to PM Mr. Clean, but if anyone else has a frame to part with, let me know!
