Anyone know how they made the 185s 30 pounds lighter than the 185?

The specs look the same:

Very simple lol the plain 185 is a bigger machine than a 185s .

25 inch tires as opposed to 22 inch. Bet that's most of it right there.

Honda was young and still learning. The 185 was considered a work horse and the 185s more of a sporty machine as well.

You should see the 185 bare frame VS the 185S bare frame. About 6 or 7 pounds there I bet.

I wonder if the 185 frame is any stronger? My guess is that the 185s frame is a better design and does not sacrifice strength. The 185 has split rear fenders, so maybe the frame design for that makes it heavier.

I have a friend that is looking for an ATC for rock crawling and he was looking at late model 110's and 125's. I finally steered him towards the 185s because it has a lot more power, the frame is stronger and it does not weigh much more.

I was clear on why the electric start models weigh more.

I totally missed the wheel size, thanks to all for the input.

If your buddy wants ant ATC for rock crawling I would suggest a jeep instead:D

But if you mean to take with when he goes rock crawling, I'd get a suspended bike.

Assuming that we all are referring to the 1980 Honda ATC 185 it does weigh more than the 185s. A good friend of mine who got me back into three wheeling commonly refers to it (1980 Honda ATC 185) as the "big frame" 185. As someone has already said in this thread, Honda was still in the development stage and figuring things out. The next year in 81' you saw the smaller 185s from 81' to 83' and the 83' 185s having front fork shocks which then morphed into the 84' 200s. Also to be noted is that the " 80' big frame 185" morphed into the 81' 200 with fenders trunks grab bars etc, interchangeable between them and the other ATC 200 thru the 1983 ATC 200 baring the front fork shocks that year.
