My "82 R was made in 6/81,hoses ect...are dated 5/81.Seemed early to me for a new model year back in those days, what's typical for Honda?

Probably just the rate it was manufactured on the line. Some parts like the hoses were made prior to. The later date was probably the date it was completed and shipped off in the crate.

So,what month did Honda usually change to the "next" model year?

I did a google search, and while this link doesn't provide a definite answer, it does give some general information.

My takeaway from this:
1. The feds dictate the automotive model year
2. Motorcycles are not governed by the feds and are up to the manufacturer and change depending on circumstances
3. Off-Road motorcycles (I'm assuming they mean ATV's as well) usually move to the next model year in the spring.
