Alright everyone,
In my last posting I listed all my pictures and the story, but to give everyone the quick low down and dirty... I picked up these bikes and parts and I am going to be doing a restore on the yellow bike. The owner was ATC250RLEN.... not sure if you have seen him on the boards here but if you Google his tag he has a website on his projects etc that he has had in the past. He has a lot of good tips on restoring parts etc, and has a wealth of knowledge.... He really took care of me and I truly appreciate him for that. I will post the pictures of all the parts again, and then a picture of the Yellow bike when he had restored it. He put inverted forks on it (which he was mentioned for along time ago on here) but they did not come on the bike.
My problem is that I am trying to figure out what I am going to do for the color scheme.... any ideas out there would be greatly appreciated.... the more I look at they way he had it, the more I like it..... I am just undecided. I will post pictures and keep everyone as the build progresses.
All the parts.....
192227 This was one of two extra frames that he gave me with NO cracks or breaks
192228 A full Chrome DG exhaust
192229 A New set of coolant hoses
192230 A New rear shock cover
192231 A New chain guide
192232 A nice set a radiators
192233 A set of OEM rime and tires... tires are old
192234 Multiple sets of fairings, radiator guards, four tanks including a short track tank and a very
desirable black
192235 The original bike, a roller with extended swing arm and polished rims, with new shoes all around
192236 A better pic of the swing arm
192237 A stock swing arm
192238 Another pic with an extra axle, Carlisle flat track tires and rims
192239 A pic of the second frame
192240 Multiple sets of handle bars, another axle and front shocks.
192241 A powder coated stock swing arm standard length
192242 The carb, brake lines, throttle cable, and a pack of stickers
192243 A New stainless steel bolt set and a set of foot pegs
192244 Air box, radiator brackets, grab bar, skid plate and the muffler
192245 A TRI-Z headlight COMPLETE
192246 A misc. box of parts which includes two jugs one is listed below
192247 This was one of the Paul Turner racing jugs he through in with all the parts.
192248 More parts
192249 More parts and a drag bar
192250 Stickers galore
192251 Some New OEM parts/seals and a set of T-handle wrenches
192252 This was his custom built 310.... it just needs to be polished up..... it's ready to go.
192253 A pic of the 310 ready to go.
192254 A second motor just need side covers
192255 My son holding up the plastics to give a better perspective
192256 A LARGE POT of misc. metric nuts and bolts
Here is the picture of the bike after ATC250RLEN restored it.... I kind of like this color scheme.... there is quite a story behind this bike.... as the post goes along maybe I will find time to tell....
192257
Please chime in guys as I need your input and ideas on how and what to do with this build.

HOOOLLLY CRAP! Long story short, my family were late bloomers for obtaining a computer/internet in the house and I can remember being 17 years old, surfing the net for ATC 250R pictures, finding Len's and watching the progress on that R. It was my first true love for 3rd gen's and I still have all the pictures printed and in a folder somewhere. I cannot believe you scored that bike....uh, why is it in pieces, did he ride the goodie out of it after restore? That is a truly beautiful color scheme. If it were me, I would bring it back to its former glory, inverts included.
Here is a pic of Len on the finished product.

Yeah Yaegerb,
I have all of his photos too.... :D He also included some photos of what he was planning on doing with this bike..... Solid black and chrome to the hilt..... I like the black, but fell that soon as it get dirty it really takes away from the appearance and the black shows scratches..... I really like his color scheme.... Do you know where I can get a good set of inverts?

The bike was in pieces because he was tearing it down to restore it again.... the long story short is he sold this bike like 3-5 times and it kept coming back to him.... he won't get it back from me... :Bounce This is the bike I will ride til' I cannot ride anymore!!!

Yes I do. Contact Jason Hall (here on the boards). I plan on having him set me up some inverts for my R in the distant future. His invert work is very good.

Wanna get rid of that paul turner cylinder?

04-29-2014, 12:17 AM
I'm not sure that I want to let anything go just yet..... someone offered me $175 for the Short track tank already, but basically as you can see I have enough parts to basically make 2 bikes...... it's just do I really want to do that... and if so what parts do I want to use..... he said this motor is super special and asked that I only bring it back to him if anything needs to be done to it, and that he would do it..... he said he has had special work that no one know about inside? :wondering Not really sure what all that could be... but if he laid a Paul Turner to the way side to run this top end then it must be something special.... he said it has Great compression and is ready to be put in an ridden.... can't wait!
Contacting places tomorrow for powder coating.... or is there anyone on here that does it for members at a really good deal? Remember the military doesn't get paid that well!!!

Man i hope some of the new school guys realize how damn cool this is. Doesnt matter whats done in there, im betting he just would rather not give up his secrets. Having grown up around old school drag racers and dirt trackers has made me respect this quality to the nth degree.

I Love this entire story. Except the scumbags at the beginning stealing your stuff... Yaeger, that is a cool story. Love it. DOHC, Back in the day. There was a guy in NY I think.. Building 1980-81 Arctic cat El tigre 6000 engines. He sealed them. You payed a kings ransom up front for his racing engine. And won every race you entered more less lol. And rebuilds were FREE... Yes,,FREE.. IF,,The seal was broken. He wouldn't touch it ever again. True story :) I don't know of anyone opening one up. But I'm sure someone probably did. Stubbie, I want to contribute something to this build. When the need arises please lmk, No big deal. But I would love to help. I have had bikes stolen and KNOW 1st hand the pain these low life maggot sucking, good for nothing sewer swimming scumbags cause. I can't imagine having it happen the way it did to You and your family. Parts or bucks. Just lmk. But it would be my privilege to help out. I had a set of inverts but just gave them away.... You missed them by less than 2 weeks lol.
What is the average cost to have a frame powder coated?
Seems to depend where you look. I had quotes of 250-350 depending if its blasted or not, then I found another local guy who would do my fork tubes, front hub, frame, and motor mounts for 325, nothing pre-blasted and I was very excited to find someone that cheap.
Blasted, expect around 200-250. Not pre-blasted 250-300
I can help on small parts powdercoating. I'm not set up for frames or swingarms at the moment, but I can do just about everything else.

atc007,
Your Killin' Me!!!!! :Bounce :beer Too Funny!!! I appreciate the gesture, but I'm not sure what I would need?? The inverts would have been soooo cool, but I got a good set of oem's that I think are going to do just fine.....
Hey you guys know I was asking for input on what color scheme I should do? I was thinking that I may follow what ATC250RLEN had previously done with the bike, and I never got any input from anyone on here...... BUT I saw a posting the other day that had a 200x with carbon fiber fenders....... RADICAL!!! I know if I had a set of those I would try to do some thing special with them....So I called Meier and found out they do the Carbon Fiber sets whenever they get bad plastic, and they had just ran a set, but not for the 250r..... They told me to call back this next week and see if they get anymore ran through..... they are pretty cheap too, so I think I may go that route. I will keep everyone posted on the fenders and what I decide to do.
Today I went down to Jacksonville Fl. and I found a shop down there that is willing to powder coat my frame for $150 or maybe even less!! Now the question that everyone is probably wondering is.... WHAT COLOR??? Well......... I went with the standard Red! There are just too many possibilities with this color..... I could still follow his color scheme, I could use the carbon fiber fenders, I could go with black fenders, or I could go back to the original ALL red.... which I truly love, and that was also the color scheme my bike had that was stolen......
NOW FINALLY for a little work today..... Yaeger, after I started looking at all the stuff I wanted to polish, I knew it would be WAY TOO MUCH to send out to have done, so I went down and bought a bench grinder, and a polishing wheel....... This is where I am at thus far, I do have work to do still to get them where I want them, BUT....... What do you guys think???

Thanks for the reply..... I agree with ya man.... got respect our elders, even though I'm one of them!! :D Really though..... ATC250RLEN took care of me so the least I can do is respect his wishes!!! More to come!!! Stay with me!! :welcome:

Nice work. The only problem with the bench grinder is it doesn't turn at high enough RPM to cut the aluminum and give it a luster. Other than that I think it did a damn fine job!

Hey motoman,
yes..... The shock is a trx shock (i believe)..... Anyway the hose from the shock rez to the shock itself is a little longer, and with it all bunched up by the aibox.... Well it wasn't working too well. So i looked back at atc250rlens bike 9the guy i got it from and he had it mounted there.... I tried it... It worked and i thought....awesome!!! Works for me...... ;) you can see atc250rlens set up below

207397Stubbie, when inverted forks first started showing up on mx bikes, back in 1990-91, I knew I wanted to add a set to my 250R. Fast forward a few years, and I believe the first 250R I saw with them was Len's 250R. So, the very bike you're rebuilding now, was very inspirational to me about 14 years ago. Bring 'er back to her former glory for us all!

Yes Sir, I'm trying!!! I am short a few things.... I am looking for a coolant reservoir overflow bottle cap. Anyone out there please let me know. I would be willing to purchase it. Other than that I am awaiting funds, so I can purchase all new plastics! I can't afford a $600 set of triple trees for the inverted forks, so I am going Len's route and having a set welded up. This was how he originally accomplished his. I am still in contact with Len and he's a good friend.... He hasn't seen the bike and where I am at in the build. I want to get it finished and then send him pics! I will be in receipt of the triple trees on Wednesday, so hopefully I will have some NEW pics to you guys by Friday with the inverts on the bike!! Thanks for the Bump...... and again.... lookin' for that Coolant bottle cap!!! :beer
