All stock from the factory 85-86 and trx 86-89 250rs have six speed tranny. 1st down, 2 nd threw 6th is .up. 81-84 are five speed. Some people confuse 84 for 85.Like on CL.

I just read a post on a trike page on Facebook and the guy is claiming his 85 is a five speed also, now the picture he posted was in fact a liquid cooled 250r but I think some people just can't count. My 85 has six gears every time I ride.

I have 4 85 motors and they are all 6 gears. I had an 85 20yrs ago I am almost 100 percent it had 5 gears.
I was racing a buddy that had an 86 trx and once I topped out he kept climbing. They were both stock. I had always thought 85s were 5 and 86 were 6 until a year or so ago.

I have a pair of '85 that are 6 speed.

And beyond that, my genuine article Honda factory service manual states '85 were 6 speed. No mention of any water pumpers with a 5 speed in my service manual whatsoever... I would assume that if there was a limited number of 5 speed waterpumpers out there, they would have been noted in my manual and a section of service specs would be in the manual pertaining to that machine.

I have not yet seen hard proof of a factory 5 speed. My guess is the 5 speed water pumper rumor originates from 6 speeds with a non functional gear.....

Any chance a racer would intentionally remove 1 gear set?? Would it even be mechanically possible/plausible??

And furthermore, no difference in trans gear ratios noted in my service manual. For the gear ratios, it states '86 is same as '85. Only saying because I have heard the myth that the '85 had different gears.

Hey Kevin, if that guy is local he might have what he thinks is a 5 speed. The motor that came out of your frame never shifted into 6th. Never could figure out why, got sick of tearing it down and sold it 15 years ago.
