Hi i have a 83 big red motor fabbed into my 200x chasis, ive done alot of work to this motor and it runs great/fast but now that im out riding it hard in the dunes agian it has a shifting problem...
it upshifts fairly decent, but as im going up a steep dune it refuses to downshift under power, if i let off the gas fully it downshifts but then im stuck of course.
i did take the motor completely down in half to powdercoat it, and it shifted fine before
any adjustment i can make? shifter is not hitting anything, clutch is adjusted just right (but is worn still slips a little)
thanks!

Is the shifter loose on the shaft spline?

NEVER shift a machine under load. Bent shift forks and broken drum stoppers are not fun.

He can correct me if I'm wrong. I believe you just have to notch the front frame tube to accept the starter. Otherwise all the mounts should be the same. I have an 82 200E motor I'm debating on putting in my Auto-X.

i cut the frame and welded a tube on the outside for strength since i jump alot.
you also have to cut the chain adjustment by the hi lo box and rig up a new front mount, the stock wont work
use a S' motor or M' motor, the E motor is more of a hassle then its probably worth
Now back to the downshifting issue?

Few things cause your particular problem , worn shift forks , clutch not adjusted correctly , worn shifter star .
Before you dig into the motor try Mobil 1 synthetic for motorcycles .

it may be the shift star, i know the clutch is worn it slips a little no matter how its adjusted
My 85M was a hard down shifter that sometimes would not shift at all when it got warm. I noticed the PO had run the trike up on a rock or log bending the shifter in towards the motor. I took off the shifter and straightened it out, then assuming the shift rod was bowed I put a big crecsent wrench on the end and gave it a couple good pulls opposite the direction the shifter had been bent. (I know probably not recommended but it's my kids after school beater.) I also changed the oil to real ATV oil not straight 10-40 and re-adjusted the clutch.
It is not as smooth a shifter as our other trike but definitely better has not been stuck in gear since doing the above, even after long rides.
