84 200X Acquired for "Classics" Test and "Rust to Glory" Build.

The other day we acquired a 1984 Honda ATC200X to sue for a "Classics" vintage test video and potentially a "Rust to Glory" build project. Having the most historic impact and with the largest number of performance parts available from the aftermarket, the first generation 200X seemed like the best choice for a long term test unit. Perhaps we will need to hook up with a generation 2 owner for some head to head testing for the "Classics" video.

There is some surface rust on the pegs, some bolt heads and here and there in small amounts on the frame. A little cleaning, wire brushing, painting and replacing a few bolts should go a long way.

So it needs a grab bar, a couple bushings, the silencer is questionable for this model, and it needs some axle bearings. That pretty much covers whats bad and needs attention to make it a solid stock runner.

The good stuff, the plastic is all intact with no cracks, and virtually no sign of fading. The seat cover is issue free, although not as nice as a Cosmic Quads cover. The handlebars are straight, and of course, we love those Renthal ATV grips.

Finding no air filter in the airbos was scary and we almost walked away, until we realized it had what feels like lots of compression, it fires up on the first or second kick, and doesn't smoke at all. The owner says the thing has sat in a garage since 1997 and has only been started every few months to keep fresh fuel in the carburetor. This engine was lucky and appears to be in very good condition. Uni filter, on the way!

The frame looks straight, and crack or repair free.

Other than some stuck on sticker residue, the tank is dent free and in pretty darn good condition.

Glad to see that the headlight does indeed work. The suspension seems to be in good working order at both ends. Well, as good as can be expected from a 30 year old machine.

Thats a really nice 200x to start with. this will be something to follow. I think there are more 84 200x's out there than any other single model.

The grab bar and maybe the exhaust will be replaced for our stock test, most likely with aftermarket components. An aftermarket exhaust just lets you experience what a stock engine has to offer unrestricted. We will also replace the missing decal on the rear of the fenders and replace those burly 22x11-8 Fast Trekkers with a stock size, but much lighter tire for the stock review.

As far as a build project goes, its too far out to determine whether we will do a nice mild trail build with some suspension work, cosmetics, controls, and a mostly stock engine, or if we'll will build another monster motocrosser. I think we will fix what needs fixed for now, shoot it stock in in mid to late summer and get to know the machine for a few months of riding before we decide what we should do with it.

We're always open to suggestions.

Sounds like a good plan man. I have not done much to my x except .20 over wiseco, xr200 cam, dg pipe and rejet. I will say this though with them little mods I did it really woke the bike up. I will be following this project as well.

Good looking bike, im curious on what you paid for it. I got an 85 200x that i got down here in florida for 575$. Thing was pretty mint considering that it was older than me by a few years. Kept mine all stock for awhile but now that its starting to smoke i was thinking about bumping it up a little. Glad to see people are garage keeping these things and selling them for cheap everywhere.

I'm excited for this one. Moreso than the other performance builds.
Any other plans for trikes in the future? Maybe a face off between the big 3? Maybe some hardtail racers?
Or put a 250es though the paces and see what they can do and what the limits are.

Im going to be watching this thread aswell.Im picking up an 84 200x this weekend. I have a plus 6 durablue 82 250r axle and a old school DG swingarm for it. I have several 250Rs and a quadsport and a 83 auto x. But Im getting a deal and 84 200x was my first trike. I bought it brand new off the showroom floor in April 84. I had a Bills pipe ,10.5 -1 high compression piston,bigAls cam,K&N filter.Big Als heavy duty valve springs and bigger carb. It loved race gas.Sold it after I bought my sweet 85 r the next year.

Its hard to say what this machine will turn into. I love that they are affordable. Turbo, the seller was asking $900 obo. We picked it up for $800. You could throw in a new air filter, remove the broken grab bar and ride this thing this weekend. I think it was a fair deal. I don't know what you could get better for less.

Ideas, I's like to maybe to a stock test with an 86 200X since they go together and it shows he evolution of the machine. Allen Knowles at CT tells me that he thinks the stock ATC200X is the best ATV ever made. I imagine for the fun it provides, not to mention the price. I think it would be fun to ride side by side with a Yamaha Raptor 250, which is the 200X of today.

Future tests. Along with doing the stock 200X vintage test, we will also be doing a stock review on a 1985-1987 250SX. For those who are into the old quads, we have plans on shooting an LT500. We will be shooting these tests mid to late summer.

For what you get for the money I have to agree with Allen when he says it might just be the best all around ATV ever made. Granted, by today's standards its a tad underpar but still a very good but with the tons of aftermarket support for it.

As for the grab bar I would see if you can find a nice original to stick on there. Aftermarkets in my opinion look weird.


Excited for the future videos as well the Sx is goin to be sweet and hopefully you'll be able to get an 86 200X to test. I'm sure there are people here who would lend you theirs for a video.

stroberts has a sweet 86 200X he has volunteered to bring out and run with our 84 for some generation 1 and 2 action. Man, we have some work to do in order to make our 84 look nearly as nice.
