So can someone enlighten me on the differences between a 81 250r frame and 82 250R frame? Looking at parts drawings, there is a different part # for the frame for each year. 81 ends 000ZA and 82 ends 020ZA. From what pics I can find, mostly on ebay the only difference I've spotted so far is no mounting points for air ducts up at the steering head on the 81 (mine is a 82). I wanted to be able to register/insure this for riding on properties that require it. After removing the paint from the VIN I come to find out it unreadable. Therefore unable to be registered. So I'm search of a decent frame or a clapped frame with a clean VIN.(classified ad posted!) So I was wondering if I come across an 81 frame for the right price is there anything else beside the air scoops that won't mount up. Basically would like to know any and all differences. Thanks!

The airbox to frame is different.81 draws air from under the seat/rear fender. The rear brake peddle pin is in different location.81 is setup for drum brakes.

Main thing is the 81 is drum and the 82 is disk for the rear brake. 81 has no way to mount the brake parts for a juice brake. You could make them, some have. How many #'s are not readable on yours? Some acids will let you read a stamped # that is wore off or lightly stamped.

It's pretty bad. Hate to say it but almost looks as if it were intentional.

Try calling the dmv and tell them you just powder coated a frame and now the Vin is not completely legible and see what they say. You may get lucky and the will give you a new one.
