Lookin for some clear answers hopefullly for a friends ES thats been sitting for 8 years- I'm trying to get it goin. However -It has issues.
1st -it seems it has 0 spark now after sitting. So I checked harness & connections (unplugged & plugged back), stop switch also disc., measured V at BLK/RED wire from stator-it has no voltage but resistance is in spec?. So I removed stator cover & found some prior damage on stator & some to flywheel (from broken starter gears getting trap in between apparently). I didnt find any gears inside there now. He had replaced the starter gears prior (they were damaged when he got the ATC). The starter gears he had put in are still fine. Not sure how it ran before though?- Anyway, it doesnt run now.
So just from the grinding marks on the stator- it needs replacing. Hopefully the flywheel is still OK enough. Need to find a stator next- but would like to know why is it common for these starter gears to break?-(afraid its gonna happen again). Is it the starter clutch/bearing inside the flywheel? Or is the problem with the one way clutch on the other side? NOTE: This BR does the common whirling sound & clunk when shut off..... ALSO: the kickstarter slips (doesnt always catch)-is this related to the starter clutch/bearing or the spring/ratchet assembly on the kick shaft? -if not what is causing these issues? I searched but not really clear. Not sure how many problems I'm dealing with. Can anyone clear this up? Would really like to get it going eventually..thanks.

So after more searching on here- it SEEMS the one-way/sprag bearing on the clutch (right side) causes the kickstart to slip ,also causes the broken starter gears & also the whirling & clunk when shut off.....sprag bearing-$90 from service honda + stator-$200. .. Whats the chance of finding a good used sprag? -probably very slim & cond. . Would it have to be from a 85 or 86 250ES only? The stator could get by with used but even those are pricy nowadays & it seems to be specific to 85 also. -shoot!
How do you know if the one-way sprag on the FLYWHEEL (left side) is bad? Would it cause the starter gear to turn while kickstarting?-or what? or what

I just bought a new one way clutch bearing for my '85 250sx, it cost me $82, that's including shipping to Canada. I got it from ebay. The '85-'87 250es/sx use the same one-way clutch bearing. The stator plugs are the same for at least an '85-'86, but the inside might be different.
