i just tore down a 1983 200e. it was a runner, but overall just in tough shape. i had thought of using the engine in a planned auto-x build, but realized that the sub-tranny won't fit. after i pulled the engine, it looks as though i could replace the left side cover with a 200m or s cover and just lose the sub-tranny and add a regular sprocket. am i nuts? is there a difference other than the left case cover?

the entire side of the case is different. I imagine the case is totally different from any other model because of the extra sub trans. the sprocket is also different and you will not be able to fit a normal sprocket on it as the gear setup internally and the sprocket it comes with is different. get a 200m or 200s engine and have yourself a good deal. too bad you tore the motor down, you could have probably gotten $100 for a good runner. you could look at doing a small refresh and sell it online to make up your loss. or offer to trade for a good running 200m.

From what I've seen. A 200E motor will bolt into the X frame. You need to notch the tube by the starter. Was considering doing swap myself after I burned up both my 200 motors.

Redsox, you can get a crate motor from BENNY for about 700$ if you want to keep it??

I never mind dumping money because I keep most of my ATC parts/machines.....

Bolt in, fill oil and enjoy a NEW motor, or dick with the old one that probably wasn't taken care of.You can't bore a motor, add a new piston, use new gaskets, have a perfect cam, and shift like it's new for 2/3rds of that cost.

i should have been more specific. i didn't tear down the engine. i took apart the 200e parts machine that has been sitting in my barn. just needed to make room. i pulled the engine out and thats when i started thinking about swapping the left case. its still together. it will probably be hitting craigslist soon.

I have a 200s motor that needs some work if you wanna trade partial with cash? I'm restoring my 200e and I could use a spare engine.
