My father tried to buy this bike off Craigslist once but it had already sold. Then it popped up again so he picked it up from a member on here. He got it knowing it would be a project, But it didn't end up going anywhere. So I bought it off him a while back with plans to go through the entire machine. You know, Scrubbing crap off of nearly every part so you can refinish them, Fixing 30 years worth of random quick fixes, Slaving over faded plastics with sandpaper and worn arms (only to still have to polish them after), Busting knuckles and cussing over stripped nuts, Listening to your wife complain about money spent on new hardware/parts.....Yeah, the GOOD stuff.
Well here we go.
You could ride it as it was, but it was a little nerve wracking. You could tell instantly it needed to be combed over..

Then I moved some of my stuff back out of his shop, and into mine (My brother stores his stuff there along with a close friend/riding buddy. It gets full) And that enabled me to actually work on it since I didn't have to drive to the other side of Grand Rapids anymore.
189301
Then teardown.
189302
Fins were cut up pretty good which is unfortunate, but the pipe fits it so I can live with it.
189303
189304
It's completely down to the frame now and I have noticed a bigger issue..
189305
Yeah, It's chewed.
189306
I have a good bottom end sitting around, I may just swap top ends and go from there. But I will more than likely split both and build on the best bottom end
Also need a stock rear brake lever, and any m/c that fits this frame.
189307
Check out those motor mount bolts^^ :wondering
Here is where I need some expertise... I need to identify this pipe. I have been told it is a bassani, Just want to check with some members on here who may know what it is for sure.

Also got these in from Bruce. Huge thanks! Slipped them into a package of stickers I bought from him. Quite a nice surprise!

Hopefully this can be a fast moving project but I don't see if being done in time for TF at all. Anyone have some trick parts or oem stuff, let me know.

Good deal on the pipe, Glad to know what it is for sure. Was it made for the 300? Or just the 250?

I have known about both of yours and a few others.
Anyway, probably going to be digging into the bottom ends this weekend. Get a good, clean one built up and go from there. Eventually it will end up with new plastics and I dont think I am staying with the original colors on this one.

No pictures, but I went through and rebuilt the carb today. Motor with good cases should be done by next week and then I need to nail down the rear brakes. Managed to get all the NOS parts to rebuild the front forks from a local dealer, so that will come next. Then just gotta sand plastics and get stuff coated.

Anyone know what model this carb is? Haven't looked much into it but the slide measured out to 32mm. This is the carb that came off the bike
189720
Polished up the forks. Still have to finish the other
189721
189722
And pulled the top end in order to check the condition of the 300 kit and build a proper bottom end. Not bad, could use a hone. Got a nice ring groove at the top but the flash made it look 50x worse. Dome looks pretty good.

Gotta fix the swing arm, Nothing big.
189725
My favorite part was the threadlocker/gasket in a tube all over everything, Dammit
189726
I'm picking up steam. If I get going quick enough it may be done in time for TF

That carb is the oem stock 30 mil for the 83-84 250r. Check to see if it has a # 135 jet. The 300 kit came with a 135 jet for the stock 83-84 250r carb.

Yeah that's a bassani, mine looks just like it. It will fit both 250&300.
Nice build! I'm currently trying to throw together a 300 as well.

Awesome, I had a feeling it was the stock carb. I couldn't see any markings on the jet itself but I have a tin full of them, so I'm sure I can get the correct size.
Yeah, that pipe fits well and sounds decent. Probably stick with it unless something cool pops up. But with how many 300 builds that are going on I think parts buying may start becoming competitive haha

Great start to a nice build. I am surprised to see so many 300 kits showing up. I don't remember that many from the 80's

Got a little more progress. Things have been slow lately. Nothing but OT at work and random customer machines coming by for repair at the garage. I have been stockpiling a little but for now here is some slow progress on other bits.
Got a new toy to add to the collection..

With wifi remote and more mounts. I like using my LCD on the new 3+ black edition, don't have to switch from the remote to the app in the settings to preview video. I put up a test of it on my wife's truck yesterday just to see the quality difference from my old Gopro. Hadn't messed with any settings yet, this was right out of the box.

Covers coated with the honda logos brushed
More welding, blasting, polishing, and coating now.

I haven't updated much, I definitely prefer working on it rather than talking about working on it. But, here it is on its way back together. Got excited and slipped the bassani and 300 kit on it to see the colors together. It's getting black plastics this time around, I think it will work well with the dark metallic frame. I will still use my faded red plastics for a little while longer unless I get off my butt and get the black.

Well after that I buried the bike and forgot about it.
Dug it back out, got the rear end more together with a new chain and brakes! Got a torque link coming too so that should be set. Rebuilding the forks and since they are apart, I'm re-polishing them. Didn't care for how they turned out my first go around.

^^As it sits, I'm an idiot and apparently don't learn from other people's mistakes, So I plastidipped the spidercracked fenders, Now I'm sanding them back down :( That crap doesn't peel off old fenders as easily as anything else.

^^Rear end almost complete

Anybody know a part number for a twist throttle cable by chance?
M.Pargiello
11-14-2014, 07:03 PM
Torque link is in!
And I found my twisty is a motion pro whirlpull type so that cable is coming. NOW, it gets shoved to the back again for a little because the new top end for the zinger is going to be here monday :D
