hey guys. i have been doing a complete tear down on my new 85 for a restore and i have been trying to get the swingarm off all day without any luck. through some research i found someone made a tool out of a socket for the castle looking outer nut so that's what i have done. the atv has been outside for a few years in the Canadian elements have hit a lot of it hard. there was no cap on the end either so it was open to the elements. so far i have drenched it in liquid wrench, used heat and used my new tool with no success it keeps slipping off. it looks like someone kept hitting it with a screwdriver and hammer and that is what is causing the slipping of the tool. is there any tips that im missing? im thinking of drilling with a small bit to try to square off the damage from the screwdriver but im told the parts are discontinued.

I'm not sure how that comes apart, but if the area can withstand a lot of heat (as in, no rubber or anything that will be damaged by the heat), a friend taught me a trick he uses and it's always worked for me. Heat the nut and bolt until they are both very hot, I do it until they've been red for a while. Then let them cool off completely ON THEIR OWN, as in don't cool them off with anything. Then hit the area with penetrating oil and remove the nut. Every time I've done that the bolt or nut has come right off.

i am changing out everything rubber and bearings so heat is fine. i cant get my hands on torches is my problem though. i only have a plumbers torch. not enough to get it red hot. maybe il have to track down torches if theres no other solution.

I have the same thing to look forward to when I move back to Illinois in August. I left my '85 250sx with my friend when I moved out west 10 years ago. It's been sorta covered since then, but I use "covered" loosely. The rear end was in need of some help then, so I can only imagine what it's like now, luckily it's not been ridden much since then.

You need these two tools and a 1/2" impact. The tool listed on Ebay will serve as both tools but if the pivot bolt is heavily corroded, You will want the 17mm allen bit. Hit it with heat before trying to break it loose.

The outer ring is a locking collar. That has to come off first.

Hit both parts with the impact in the tightening direction first then loosen. The 17mm allen bit can be bought at Sears, local discount tool stores, Ebay Etc.

I bought it today. Same one. And I built the one in the second pic by cutting down into a socket with a cutting disc. Just can't get it to hook up since the locking nut is somewhat mangled.
Your basically the reason I'm tearing everything down. I was inspired by your sx build and want to somewhat duplicate it the best I can. Love that motor. Do you mind if I fire questions your way from time to time? Have rebuilt a bunch of motorcycles but It's the first time I'm going into detail to this extent.

Right on. Something you'd probably know that I've been wondering right off is that I did the 400ex carb on my 350x, can the 350 carb go on the 250? Does it need other mods to work well? Just been wondering since I have one here. Did a quick search and just saw that its doable and that's pretty much it

Oh ya, the 350X carb is of the same QA series as the SX carb. Even the stock SX choke valve and cable assembly fits. You may have to mess with the jetting but the X carb is a good upgrade to the SX.

Ok that's good. The sx carb has seen better days

I just did a couple of 250es's, the one 85 came apart nice and easy, the 86 took heat and a lot of work to get apart. All I know is there is alot of antiseize on all the parts now.
