Alright I went with my dad to Gorman OHV here in California last year. We rode around for a few hours. I noticed when we were at the camp site, my dads right calf had a huge blister on it. He is a diabetic and cant feel sometimes. We packed everything up and headed home. A few days later it got infected and turned into a real nasty burn. SCared me alot. He healed after treatment and is ok now, thank god.

His bike is a 1985 Honda 250SX with a complete Cobra exhaust.
What I would like is if someone could build me a headpipe with a custom heatsheild. A sheild from a stock 250sx headpipe would be great. His exhaust is a Cobra complete exhaust. I would buy the headpipe + sheild and ship it to you? Plus pay for the return shipping and work done.

I need the heat sheild to be at least 1 inch away from the headpipe. So we can keep riding and have no worrys of him getting burned again.

Let me know what we can do, someone. Havent rode much sense the accident. Would like to keep trikeing..:wondering

you do know your dad can get burned on a heat shield too right? its still metal and still touches the head pipe just probably does not get as hot as a the head pipe alone. maybe he should wear a good set of pants and not shorts instead. from what it sounds like he was not wearing proper protection

You could wrap it with header wrap also. On my rokon i have wrap on the header and you can touch it without getting burnt. It would be the cheapest and maybe the best option

hello;

You can try wrapping it with header wrap as 86ts suggested but use two or three layers of it, not just one. If you use just one and leave your hand or calf against it, it will still fry you but not as quickly as with no wrap at all.

Do not buy white.

Maybe buy a short roll of the good brand of regular wrap and a 15’ roll of dei brand titanium wrap which is made from lava rock. Do a small test area with each wrap next to each other in the area needed. Ride the bike for 5 minutes at higher rpms to get it hot. Check the temp of the wraps with an infra red heat gun or with your finger. It will NOT burn you. They may be the same or one may be much cooler.

read this.

HEAT SHIELD – You can have one made from carbon fiber using high temp resin, not the resin they use to make car hoods out of.

Carbon fiber info forums.

I would NOT use a metal heat shield.

Chuck, I used these conduit pipe supports before on a 350X head pipe with great success. Fairly inexpensive in the hardware stores.
All kind of sizes available too.

I used the black dei wrap and doubled it up where my leg goes. I road 26 miles with my riding boot touching the wrap without any problems. 26 miles on a rokon takes a long time, lol

When I was a mechanic a few years ago for motorhomes that needed a flexable heat sheild on the exhaust we used little mats that looked like foil but were lined with asbestos or some type of insulation. You use tie wire (like bailing wire) to hold them on 1 sheet would work and it is made for heat shielding exhaust so I know it would work. Not pretty but a cheap fix that would do exactly what you needed.

Here is a link to a similar heat shield you can get at Walmart it is more expensive than I have seen them but this will give you an idea of what I mean http://www.walmart.com/ip/34860460?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227023265753&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=36458246461&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=65822150941&veh=sem

Yeah he was not wearing the right gear.. I am EXTREMELY familiar with diabetes. I suggest you read this over and over and over then ask yourself how much the doctor bill was, and how much your dad’s health is really worth compared to spending $19.95 on a roll of header wrap. Even if the wrap was $100.00, does it make sense NOT to use it?

You might consider installing the header wrap similar to the way I described and if it is still too hot, install the brackets OVER the header wrap and then install a metal heat shield. Keep in mind that the heat shield will stick out a little and he might start rubbing his leg on it and just that friction can create a blister. To minimize this possibility he can wrap his leg with gauge wrap or put a gauge pad on with light adhesive tape in te area his leg might rub it.

what a heat shield sent it to HRE and have it built. He did my exhaust for me the way I wanted or you tell you dad to wear boots like we all should.
