I got this Big Red from a neighbor (apparently I have lots of neighbors with these....) a little over a year ago, but it sat on the back burner for a while because I was workin on other projects (my Suburban) and last fall I started college at Texas A&M. I had some time to work on it over Christmas break, which was when I built the rack and fenders in the video posted below. So anyhow, this year I finally have the opportunity to go the Mud Nationals with some buddies from down here, and I plan to take this BR since it already has my Vampires on it and runs the best out of all my machines. I want to spend my spring break gettin it all ready to go. As of right now my plan is to seal everything up with plenty of silicone and put on a snorkel, put on a exhaust stack, lift both the front and rear, and possibly extend the swingarm if I have time, rebuild the front rack to hold a cooler and still have useable headlights, and consolidate the electrical system into one waterproof box on the handlebars (eliminating the dash and handlebar switchbox). A couple things I need to know; how much angle can I put on the swingarm before the u-joint gets in a bind? Has anyone run grease instead of oil in the rear diff and how did it turn out? Any other input and advice is greatly appreciated.

Grease in the differential?

That's crazy talk..why would you ever consider that?

Grease doesn't flow, it would simply clump up and your gears and carrier bearings would die from lack of lubrication!!

And on the rear lift idea..some thinks it a cool option.

I personally will stick with stock height for the sake of my driveshaft. I'd like it to last another 30 years!!

Some guys do the lift thing..in my opinion if you lift more than 1.5" you best keep a spare driveshaft on hand at all times!

Awesome garage by the way......huge.....

Yes awesome garage. What I'd give for a work area like that lol.

Looks awesome tho. You should upload some pics also with the fenders raised up and everything. How are the edges of the fenders? Thought about putting a finish piece of rubber on them maybe?

Captain I sent you a PM.

Howdy! I wondered if there were any other Aggies on here. I’m actually already on the ¼ Scale tractor team, Aggie Pullers. We MIG weld everything lol.

Thanks! I wanted it to be real stout. That “garage” is actually my dad’s farm shop. The enclosed working area is 60’x100’ with a 20 or 25 foot ceiling. Modern farm equipment is so damn big you gotta have that much room to work on stuff. All 5 of our Peterbilts with 40’ grain trailers can fit in there at the same time, and theres still plenty of room lol, but a combine almost takes up half the shop.

It is a good bit of weight, that’s why I’m gonna mount the cooler on the front rack lol. Shock seems ok for right now, but I may upgrade to dual shocks instead of the single.

I saw a Fourtrax 300 one time that had the diff packed with grease and an alamite on the fill cap to keep it full. I assume it was intended to keep water out, just like keepin the axle tubes full of grease to keep mud out of the splines.

I think I’m gonna extend the swingarm 3” before I lift it any, and see how it is at that point.

I’m home this weekend so I’ll take some better pictures of the rack and fenders. They edges ain’t as bad as you’d think since it’s 14 gauge steel. I thought about the trim idea, but it would just get ripped of ridin around.

Good to know. Yesterday I took my driveshaft to the machine shop to be extended 4". I'm going to clearance the U-joint so I can run about 4" of lift.

What does that fender set-up weigh?

I don't really know, I've never weighed it. My guess is 50 lbs, give or take 10. It does steer a little lighter now, and it's easier to pop wheelies lol, but when I get the swinger extended it won't be as bad.

Sweet looking br! Iv worked on to many quads with grease packed rear end please save your dif and don't do it. As for "waterproofing" the grease still allows water in and grease kills the rear end. I know there is people that mud who thinks its good but it's horrible. It's so hard to get that crap out of the housing and tubes as well with out tearing apart.

Grease is for compromized rearends, if you have loud bearings, or a crack in the housing, grease can be used to both quiet it up, and keeps it from leaking out. I bought a truck once with the tranny filled with grease to quiet it up from a dishonest person. Luckily i had a spare and swapped it out one afternoon.
Speds take like half a qt, seal it up good and check for milk after every ride, if its milky, dump it and start fresh!
Rack looks good, but them front corners would have my ass scared! You might end up rounding them instead of the sharp 90* after you get a cpl bruises

Well grease in the diff is obviously a bad idea, i had just seen it and thought I'd ask. Any tips for waterproofin the electrical system? Got a can of dielectric grease, and i'm gonna silicone stator cover real good. Also wonderin about liftin the front. SX forks are too tall for what I want, so is weldin a split tube on Mondexbrute style my best bet?

Progress.

For those of you who have drempt of a front fork mounted snorkel for your 3 wheeler, I have found the solution!! RV sewer hose is the answer!! Durability is still up in the air, but it's cheap so it can be easily replaced. I now have a very nice snorkel that mounts to the front rack and is almost unnoticeable when I'm sittin on the machine.

I made mounts for the upright part with exhaust clamps.

AAAAAANNND, the whole setup is completely removable thanks to this awesome rubber reducer that I'm using to connect to the airbox!

I took it off and cleaned it all with acetone and sprayed some rattle can bedliner on it. We'll see how well that holds up...

I also cleaned all the electrical connections and packed em with dielectirc grease.

I had this old stack layin around so I threw it on there too.

Why didn't you run the snorkel next to the exhaust stack?

Why didn't you run the snorkel next to the exhaust stack?

My dad asked me the same question. In my experience, when riding Big Reds in deep water, the front tire has a tendency to float up, and I end up ridin a wheelie through the water the whole time. 2 wheel drive 4 wheelers do the same thing. If I mounted the snorkel on the back, then when the front goes up it would go down and end up closer to the water. By having it on the front I'm much less likely to submerge it.

Made a lot of progress on this rig over the last couple days. All that's left are some little piddly things to finish up, but I'm pretty much done for now. I have big plans come this fall though.

Finally got my driveshaft back from the machine shop Thursday. It's now 4 inches longer than stock.

Before:

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1650_zps7d55decb.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1650_zps7d55decb.jpg.html)
http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1651_zpsab5f4317.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1651_zpsab5f4317.jpg.html)

After:

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1685_zpsf872b602.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1685_zpsf872b602.jpg.html)
http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/968ce0c3-94a4-4df9-bb64-49b28539b10d_zps1b87183e.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/968ce0c3-94a4-4df9-bb64-49b28539b10d_zps1b87183e.jpg.html)

Also decided to upgrade from the arthritic factory U-joint to a much more flexible All Balls HD U-joint intended for a Fourtrax 300. The new joint is 15/16 of an inch longer than the factory one.

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1687_zps109054e7.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1687_zps109054e7.jpg.html)

So the new shaft and U-joint combined comes out to just barely under 5 inches longer than stock. The next order of business was to extend the swingarm to match the new driveline length. I cut the swingarm in half, and spliced in 4 15/16" of new material, plus a little extra to sturdy it up good. I fabricated a new A-frame style bracket for the shock mount. New All Balls pivot bearings were packed and installed with new seals. The axle also received new bearings and seals, as well as alamites to keep the tubes packed with grease. The ring a pinion got a generous helping of Royal Purple 75W-90. I also put on some 2" hub extensions to make the rear track 4" wider.

Stock swingarm:

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1688_zps615cf720.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1688_zps615cf720.jpg.html)

Extended swingarm:

So with the swingarm extended and dropped, I gained 6" of suspension lift. Now I had to extend the forks 6" to match. Went to the steel fella and got some thick wall tubing that was just a hair over 33mm OD, cut it into two 6" long pieces, and turned them in the lathe so that the slid right up into the triples just perfect. I also got some tubing that was about 34mm ID, slotted it, and welded tabs with bolt holes in em for the new shock clamps. I welded these to the extension tubes.

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1696_zpsbd52a6bf.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1696_zpsbd52a6bf.jpg.html)
http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1697_zps0cd784c5.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1697_zps0cd784c5.jpg.html)

After that was finished, I put the front end back together, finished running all the vent hoses into the airbox, put the snorkel and stack back on, and installed a new inline fuel filter. All I have left to do is plug the airbox drain hole, and get some new swingarm pivot bolt covers.

Here's some pictures of it all put together:

A little bit lol. The internet is slow as hell here, I think I started uploadin pictures to photobucket at about 9:30... I rode it a good bit this afternoon, and everything all works good. I built everything to keep the stock geometry, so it rides exactly the same as it did before the lift. Once I get up on it I can't really tell that it's any higher, until I ride it through deep water. Everything works except the brakes lol, I still have to figure out what to do about making the cables longer.

I'm completely impressed! Call me when you're ready to sell it!

Thanks! It'd take a good bit to take this one off my hands haha, I kinda get attached to some of my machines...

Thanks! You wouldn't happen to have some brake cables that are about 6" longer would you lol? I've got a pretty good supply of spare parts, I appreciate the offer though.

this is with out a doubt the baddest bigred i have seen. i think some 30 inch silver backs and an audio tube would be amazing. as far as your brakes go you could probably try using your rear hand brake cable to the front brake and maybe your front hand brake cable for the foot brake? just an idea

Haha, I see your point, but I plan to leave it like it is. It intakes air 6 feet off the ground now. I hope I never end up that deep, the extra length is for those "OH SH!T" situations.

Wish I had seen your brake idea before I left home, that would've worked good. Oh well, I grew up ridin 4 wheelers with no brakes anyway so I can handle it lol... Not really a fan of the silverbacks, I want to put a set of Outlaw Radials on it. Audio tube would be awesome, just don't have the funds for one right now.

What did you have to do as far as jetting?

Engine wise everything is stock, aside from crankcase and carb breather hoses routed into the airbox. All I did was move the intake point, and the 2" PVC I used is actully less restrictive than the stock intake path.

nice job on wheeler, its awesome.. is that a huge woodstove in the backround if so id love to c pic of it lol....

Yes, that is basically a great big wood stove, but it's intended to be run on black oil, and has a black oil burner system on the door. It can be filled with great big chunks of wood (don't have to split em haha) if we run out of oil. Shop is 60x100, so we need a stove that big to heat it.

Thanks!! The swinger extension is not hard to do on the '86-87 swingarms, I figure it would be a little harder on a '85 because of the one piece arm/axle tube design. It was $60 for the driveshaft work, $35 for the new U-joint, and maybe $50 for the materials, plus about 10-12 hours of time. I thought about producing a kit, but it would probably be at least $500, plus core parts, and I can't do it during the school year.

Ahh the front tire question, seems to always show up in my threads lol. The traction on that tire is in the opposite direction because it's being pushed, and it also cleans out better that way. I think there was a thread a while back where I explained the whole deal but I can't find it. Farmers know the trick, because it originated on farm equipment such as grain carts, combines, and land levelers. It's also common on dirtworking equipment like dirt pans, and the front of some road graders.

ok im about to do a similar snorkel on my big red. what kind of flex hose did you use and where do you get it?

The flex hose is 3 inch RV sewer hose, that I got from the Hardware/Autoparts/Farm Supply/everything else store in my hometown.

Here's an idea. I have a 70$ 35AH battery, but would work with a 20$ 7.5 AH deer camera battery. I have about 150$ into it. With my battery it will play loud enough for a bonfire for well over 12 hours. And keeps the beer cold!

It barely fit in the bed of my truck, because I have a low profile toolbox with about 9" of dead space in front of it so that it can open without taking my tonneau cover off. So I ended up haulin it and my campin stuff down to Texas in a box trailer.

I wanna come down there and live on that farm!!! its just me, the old lady, two dogs (A Red Tick Coon Hound and an Aussie / Border Collie mix) two cats (great Mousers) Got a Ford pick up and a Yamaha trike and few guns... Should just about fit in down in TX no? lol Plus I look friggin amazing in a cowboy hat! lol...

Seriously though, I bet you got some nice places to ride there, I remember driving back from Waco, to the Dallas / fort worth Airport, I was amazed by the amount of open land those farms had... all I could think of was that I would HATE to be a mail man down there, it looked like there'd be 5 - 10 miles between mail boxes! Awesome country out there. I wish my company would move to a different state... CT sucks, its like the Anti-cool-stuff-anti-fun-take-your-money-and-give-you-grief-for-it-state!

I SURVIVED MUD NATZ 2014!!!

That was crazy as hell, and probably the most fun 2 days EVER!!

The Big Red was a huge hit, heard lost of folks hollerin "Look at the 3 wheeler guy!" while I was ridin haha. I only turned it over once, but I don't remember exactly how it happened...

Broke stuff:

The cupholder didn't make it.
The exhaust stack is bent slightly foreword and left.
The transmission now only works in reverse.

The transmission finally decided to crap out on the way to the sand pit Saturday night, which was not that big of a deal because by then all the good ridin was done anyway. This'll actully give me the perfect opportunity (and excuse lol) to get more cc's for this thing. It is SEVERELY underpowered in the mud, and I want it to kick ass. I'm thinking at minimum a Fourtrax 300 engine with a 380cc kit in it.

I wore the GoPro around on my head and have about 6-8 hours of stuff to go through. I'll post up what's suitable lol.

I'll try to get some up in the next 2-3 weeks, I have alot of video to go through. From what I've looked at so far I kind screwed it up a little, the camera angle on my head ain't that great lol. Battery life on the camera was kinda an issue too, and I missed some good stuff because of it. I'll do better next year lol. Wore the shirt you sent me all weekend! It's permanently orange now haha. Want me to send it to ya so you can hang it on the wall?

I definitely had the most modified 3 wheeler there. I forgot to post the other 3 wheelers I saw tho. IIRC, there were 4 other 250 Big Reds, a 200x, and a 185s that I saw while I was ridin around.

So after a awesome weekend of rompin around, turnin over, and breakin stuff, it sat in my trailer for 3 weeks until I could take it back to Arkansas. Here's what it looked like when I pulled it out of the trailer friday.

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1809_zps2a95a7a1.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1809_zps2a95a7a1.jpg.html)

So it turns out that I don't have a transmission issue after all (aside from the clutch slipping badly). Turns out I tried to make the extended driveshaft tube look a little too nice, and ground off too much of the weld. It probly broke one of the times I jumped it....

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Stonewall387/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1811_zps64c1979f.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/Stonewall387/media/1986%20Big%20Red/IMG_1811_zps64c1979f.jpg.html)

After I got it all cleaned off, I took the swinger back off and fixed it. I also added in a brace so hopefully I won't have that problem anymore. Had to drain all the watery oil out of the diff, and filled it back up with fresh. I didn't take any pictures of the repair, it's kinda ugly because I'm not real worried about appearances on this rig. I took some pictures of it parked next to my dad's stock '85, so y'all can see just how much bigger it is.

Its a 11x7 ITP Steel with a 2+5 offset just like the other 2. No spacer needed. If your going to run a 12" wheel I'd recommend a set of ITP Delta Steels. Get then all 3 with a 2+5 offset and they'll work without spacers. It'll be about 1/4" off center but with most tires thats no problem. The Vampires on this are wider than most and eat a hole in the right fork boot because of the offset, which is partly why i dont run boots.

i already have 27 executioners on 12 inch ss212 itps on the rear. i just need a bigger wheel for the front since no body makes a 27 inch tire for a 9 inch wheel. i think im just going to put a 27 inch mudlite on the front

I'd nearly say that this build deserves to go into the top tier section with Stonewalls other Big Red.
I know it's not as pretty looking as some of the other builds in that section but it is well thought out, thoroughly detailed and very very cleaver.
I'm predominantly a sport trike kinda guy but I cant stop checking out this thread.
I like it so much that I honestly believe that I will be building one like this in the near future to show up all the local quad mudding guys round my area.
I do agree though that a Big Red that bad ass need a bad ass engine to suit!:D

i already have 27 executioners on 12 inch ss212 itps on the rear. i just need a bigger wheel for the front since no body makes a 27 inch tire for a 9 inch wheel. i think im just going to put a 27 inch mudlite on the front

I think that's what Mondexbrute did for his front tire. IIRC he used a ITP delta steel. A 2+5 offset wheel should work fine, whatever style you want to use, as long as the center hole is large enough. You could probably put another SS212 on the front to match.

Great build buddy. :beer

Thanks man! Hopefully I can get some more power in this thing in the near future. If you do want to build one I'll be happy to help however I can. :beer

Resurrecting an old thread here. Life and other things get in the way and projects get put aside but not forgotten. I was finally able to get this Big Red down to Texas permanently now that I have access to a place to ride, and it has the duals on it now too! Need a larger front tire still, and Mr. Dunlap's 350 kit is looking very tempting...

Side note, snorkels only work when the 3 wheeler is upright haha...

Love the build. Especially the extension. I didn't realize how simple that would be. Looks like the duallys really could use more reduction... Poor clutch is taxed

I really want to put a reduction in it, but information on those is really hard to come by, I can barely find out anything about the 54% reduction that seems to be commonly used on Fourtrax 300's.

So how is this wheeler now? Did you ever get another engine in it with more power?

I actually just finished putting one of Mickey Dunlap's 350 kits in it and got it running last night. Lots more power now, especially with the 18% gear reduction I put together with the help of TheRealFatShady. Now I just need my pipe to come in so I can build the exhaust. Also put on a Foreman 350D clutch cover with the ports to run an oil cooler, the mounting for that is temporary at the moment, I will be moving it and adding an electric fan.

Wow that thing is sweet! Can't wait to see a video once it's finished. How did you put the 18% reduction in? Was it something you could buy or did you have to make it. I'd like to put one in mine if it's not too difficult. Love the build of your big green, nice job.

The 18% reduction has to be custom made by putting different gears on the clutch basket and the centrifugal clutch. A 54% reduction is also possible which I am considering making. I finally went and bought a new battery for it today. Having the electric start working again is really nice as this engine is a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro and a half to kick start with the high compression piston haha.

Oh I see. I guess I won't really worry about it yet. Im planning on running 27x9x11 silverback x lites on one of mine, so I'll see how it turns those.

Lol ya I bet the e start is nice to have back!

You should be fine with 27's. I ran the 27" Vampires I had on this on a stock Big Red for a long time with no issue at all.

Ok sweet. To get back on topic, how does your wheeler turn the duallys with the reduction and 350 kit compared to before?

It turns them fairly well with the 18%, although I'm thinking I may go to the 54% for a little more low end torque. The 350 kit made a huge difference in power, but I broke something internally the other day crossing a log so I have to take the clutch cover off again and go figure out what that was.

Turns out I broke my driveshaft, sheared it off at the rear of the extension, so that's an easy fix, just have to weld it back together. My pipe also showed up today for the exhaust, so I'm building that tomorrow, no more pierced eardrums from the 4" zoomie pipe haha.

Are you going to any other events any time soon?

I'd like to, if I can find some that aren't too terribly far away. I was planning on going to Mud Nationals this year but wasn't able to get this thing together in time. Hopefully I can make some events this summer once I get all the kinks ironed out. Might even try to make it out to Trikefest if things work out.

Speaking of progress, I fixed the broken driveshaft and put the swingarm back on, and managed to get the exhaust mostly finished this evening. I had to build a complete head pipe because the stock one swooped down too far and wouldn't go on because of the oil cooler lines. It's 1 3/8" to 1 1/2" pipe, through a 2x12" glasspack with a 2" stack. No longer ear splittingly loud, but has a real nice throaty tone to it. It even has a nice slip joint to make it easy to take apart should the need arise. I also took the gigantic metal rack and fenders I built off in favor of the much lighter stock rack, fenders will go on once the exhaust is finished up. Next thing is to build a proper mount for the oil cooler and install the fan, then I'm going to add some LED light bars and cooler mounts, and put a seat cushion on the trunk lid.

Please excuse my gnarly ass welds, welding 16 gauge pipe with .045 flux core wire is somewhat difficult haha.

More progress was made yesterday evening. I finished mounting the exhaust and wrapped half of it, but I need some bigger hose clamps to wrap the rest of it. Put the rack and fenders off of my parts Big Red on it, they're MUCH lighter than the big metal fenders I had. Stitched up a crack in them with zip ties. Having the stock rack and fenders on there really puts some perspective on how much bigger it is than a stock machine haha. I also built a good solid mount for the oil cooler, and put the fan on it, but I need a relay and some more wire to hook it up. Yes, I know it blocks the headlight, but I won't be using the stock headlight anyway. I have some LED bars on order for some much better lighting. All that's left is to build mounts for the lights, wire the lights and fan, and build cooler racks.
