I have an opportunity to purchase a Yamaha 200. The seller tells me everything works like it should except one issue. When in gear you have to keep pressure on the shifter or it will slip into neutral. It doesn't happen every time and also doesn't matter what gear it is in. He is asking $400 for the trike. Other then this issue everything else is perfect.
I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem before and if so how big of a project this could turn into. Maybe I should just stay away?

Thank you very much for the lesson. I'll be walking away from this one.

Hello;
I would not buy ANY bike unless I could ride it hard enough to see if the trans and clutch etc. are ok. This includes going wot from a stop while speed shifting through the gears.
If that bike really does pop out of gear in EVERY gear, the prob is most likely NOT inside the trans. I have never seen a bike pop out of every single gear. That bike has 5 speeds and low horsepower so the odds of every single one of the gears wearing out enough for it to pop out of gear in every gear is possibly greater than the odds of winning the lottery.
It is possible the spring on the shift detent [item 11] is broken or the detent roller has fallen off [item 10]. This assy rides on the shift drum “segment [item 2] and helps prevent the shift drum from rotating. In my experience, if this assy is not working properly, a bike will commonly pop out of gear.
If the seller is motivated, he might pull the cover for you and allow you to inspect this assy. If it is not broken then I would walk for sure, however, if it is, you can either take what imo, is a much smaller risk and buy it as is [hopefully for a reduced price] or simply get the parts, then you or he can install them, and if it works fine, buy it then.
I can’t tell the condition of this bike but from what I can see, it does NOT look like it was thrashed or abused and good clean bikes are getting hard to find.
If it does not smoke when first started or when it is warm, the engine might not have a ton of miles on it.

The guy who is selling the trike is a co-worker of mine. He allowed me to bring the trike to my garage to go through. barnett468 you said something about pulling a cover to check item number 11/12? I'm unsure exactly where this cover is. Could you point me in the right direction.
