Hi guys
My stock tires are in need of replacement. I'm looking for your feedback on tire recommendations...I ride this bike minimally in packed clay and sand. I'm leaning towards ohtsu mr501s. Also see these goldspeed tires on eBay that look nice but are 6 ply....I don't want to lug it down with heavy tires...what do you guys recommend?

I have two sets of rear tires I trade off depending on where I'm riding because I can't chose just one!

1st is the a set of Mud Lites..perfect for mixed trail, mud, water, rocky and gravel terrain.

2nd is the ever popular Holeshot..good on loose ground(sand, dirt, gravel) and hard surface riding.

There is so much out there now that never existed 25 years ago..don't be afraid to experiment or pick more than one. It doesn't cost that much more for a second set of rims so you can do quick wheel swaps.

Do you own just one pair of footwear??

Both the ohtsu 501's and goldspeed's are 4 ply. the goldspeeds come in different hardnesses. if you buy those i would get medium or hard compound. the soft one will not bite into hard packed clay as well. i might buy the goldspeeds instead of the ohtsus bit hard to say.

Yeah 6 plies are a bit heavy but it depends what you use them for. I think 2 plies are too soft for most apps.

There are 2 model of mud lites, below is a photo of the XL-ITP. It’s a 6 ply.

kenda bear klaws. I think dougspcs might have experience with these as do some others here. 6 ply.

ok these suckers will move ALL the mud you want but my guess is that they might be just a tad bit of overkill unless you put them on a tractor, lol. 6 ply.

Thanks for all the suggestions.....the gold speeds on eBay say 6 ply so I'm assuming they are. Kinda leaning towards those....Doug I just got the bike so haven't purchased another set yet...I'm thinking of getting some 4 snows for next year...have any of you run the kenda claws? Another 6 ply tire but I think they would look good and slide well...whatever I get is gonna be a 20 not 22

Kenda no longer makes the MX sticky radial or the plain MX.

Kenda Klaws XC, 6 ply, 20x11x8, 20x11x9, 20x11x10. these will not slide as well as some these that have straight through horizontal spaces between the sets of knobs.

I'm thinking of getting some 4 snows for next year...have any of you run the kenda claws? Another 6 ply tire but I think they would look good and slide well...whatever I get is gonna be a 20 not 22

20x11x8 is great on that machine..that is the size I favour.

I personally have the Bear Claws on my 250ES and 250SX and they are awesome..would I put them on my 350X? No..they are a really heavy tire both in weight and construction, they're designed for a utility application. Also they don't come in 20"..22" is the smallest size. As great as they would be for snow traction it would take all the nimble sporty feel away from this great sport trike.

If I was to get a 3RD set for the 350X, I might choose them but they would be limited to snow use and heavy mud running which I don't personally like to do with my 350X..that is what my utility trikes are for. Bear Claws would definitely not be 'starting lineup' for me!!

I could send you tons of links to tires I've never tried, but that seems pointless. I'll give you my opinion as a 350 owner and about tires I've actually run on!!

Your Goldspeed tire looks like decent..though I have never tried them personally, they are similar to a tire called the 'Race Rail' I once had on a 200x, in fact they have come from the same mould. They were a pretty good general purpose riding tire..you wouldn't do wrong with them.

Just have some fun and dive in..you can't be wrong and it's the best way for you to learn what you like and don't. It's all very individual..

I have the gold speeds on a banshee and they are awesome and hook up well, down side extremely soft compound..... I have ripped a couple big chucks out of the knobby in the hard pack and rocks in pa. I would grade on tread life a c- to d, unless I was racing and they were throw always . If you plan on buying set every season it's a great tire.

TIRE APPEARANCE, WEIGHT AND COST - Since you mentioned tire APPEARANCE AND "6 ply" [implying you did not want heavy tires], in TWO separate posts, imo it’s OBVIOUS by these comments that you not only want your tires to work well, you also want them to look cool and not weigh a ton, therefore, it is obviously NOT pointless to send you links to tires you might not have seen before as another suggested it is even though they mentioned appearance themselves.

The links, also contain prices so you can compare those too. Not knowing whether you are wealthy or not, I thought the pricing might also be beneficial to you.

This is not to imply that their tires are bad in any way, it just seems a bit unusual to me. Hankook auto tires are made in Korea and are good quality.

To assume that just because one brand and model of tire comes out of the same mold as another brand and model does or used to that both will perform the same is not a realistic thing to do imo. This is because one company might be making them with different plies and or a different quality of rubber and or a different durometer [hardness] of rubber than the other etc.

Since at least some of the Goldspeeds come in 3 different rubber hardnesses, this info is not very helpful unless one knows what hardness rating these tires were. As I previously mentioned, you do not want a soft compound for your application.

Unless otherwise noted by the mfg., tire compounds are typically anywhere from medium to hard unless it is a Hoosier short track or asphalt tire which comes in soft to almost liquid rubber.

Hey, no prob dougspcs, we're all just trying to help him the best we can. I thought you might know something about the bear klaws he asked about, that's why I mentioned you might.


I just found out that maxxis is actually cheng shin which is an old chinese tire mfg. There is a tire called the "maxxis aspera goldspeed" which only says maxxis on it so I am trying to fond out if maxxis and goldspeed are related somehow. yeah, ok, I'm an info freak, lol!
