I am wanting to put inverts on my 85 Tecate. Are there any first gen Tecate's out there with them?

Ben's 86 with kx100 forks and some conglomeration of a front hub/axle. The stock tripples are used and must be bored slightly to fit the forks. I know its not a first gen but its probably the easiest invert conversion you'll find. Ben's been working on a new setup for the front hub amd axle to simplify tire changes, im sure he'd be willing to share info or build something.

Ive raced this trike and can say this is a huge upgrade over stock forks.

This set up would go right on a first gen with small mods to the triples to mount the radiator. Like joe said it is a big improvement over the 86 forks so I'm sure it would be night and day on a first gen.

I was thinking there was a year of kx100 forks that would slide right into the 86's 41mm bores, but maybe the kx forks were 42mm. Anyway, i didn't go forward with the conversion because I wondered how stiff they would be with the much smaller lower than the ktm inverts. Any idea what year forks you used. I was thinking the early to mid 90's were about the right size as the later ones were larger on top. Apparently my caution was unfounded?

inverted forks will be like 50mm at the top, only the tubes are smaller. Thats tecate looks like it need more shock travel up front. I'd use 91-93 KX125/250 forks, mad cheap and anodized blue yet from the factory.

Nstyle, I think they started with the inverts in 97 or 98. The ammount of material you have to.remove is minimal, you.could probably do it with sandpaper. I bought this fork setup off ebay and later sold it to ben so we cant be sure there arent any internal mods but they work great. Ben won the B vintage class at Ashtabula on this bike and i took third on it at the needt batavia race. The two.in front of me were both former pros and i finished ahead of raffa and bill casey. These forks work.

Oldschool, that picture was taken after the batavia race, the forks are slid up in the clamps for tt. I cant find the travel specs anywhere but its over 10 inches. The tubes are only 36mm but it works fine

What is done for an axle and brake setup? Can you shoot a couple pics of it? Guess I can just order a set and see what all I need to do..

86T3, thanks for the info, I didn't mean to sound like I was questioning your evaluation, my thoughts were purely based on my own conjecture from looking at the big end of some of the larger motocross bikes. I guess the kx125 ran inverts a little earlier, which apparently what little information I had, I have completely jumbled.

I didnt take any offense, no harm in asking questions bud. Ben is going to have to come back into this convo to answer the axle question but the new setup hes working on for our top secret twin builds uses the 86 tecate front hub and stock kx100 brakes.

Rims and tires are doing great, they raced 4 times this year

Im 95% sure ben is running a 2nd gen 200x front hub w custom spacers w the KX100 forks and 2nd gen tripples..
I've been thinking about doing this w mine too!

The setup is definitely an improvement over stock!

kx80 Big wheel and KX100 (same thing) inverts started in 1994. I'd know I was a kid dooling over a KX100 then. Inverts on a kx125/250/500 started in 1990

I'm pretty sure 96 was the fist year they were offered on the 100 and it was an option or a late year addition but that really doesn't matter. Mik6 is correct that set up is using an 86/87 200 x hub and the k x 100 caliper. It works fine but the rotor is a little small. It stops fine but .......issues again standby. okay as I was saying it stops fine but you have to keep an eye on the pads. They won't wear at the top and if you let them go too far you will unexpectedly have no brakes at some point. The set up in the picture does use a goofy axle and it makes it impossible to take the wheel off without removing the forks from the trees. The set up I am working on now I modified the t3 hub to work by removing an 1/8" from the rotor mount to move the rotor over for clearance. I also removed 4mm from the surface that the wheel mounts to so the wheel is centered perfectly. I made the axle and it is 14mm since the t3 axle is 17mm I made custom spacers That are stepped to fit inside the 17mm bearing and bush it down to 14mm so the axle fits. The reason for the smaller axle was because I didn't feel the forks had enough material to bore the axle holes out to 17mm and be safe. The wheel travel according to the 97 specs is 7.85" but I have measured 8.5" the 86 t3 was 9.85 but the 1" doesnt matter compared to the improved handling and dampening. I have over shot table tops that are about 7ft high so thats pretty much like dropping 10ft and didn't bottom the forks. The new kx 100 forks have 10 1/2" of travel but I don't know the diameter of the upper tubes (42mm prior to 98) As to the OP's original question,I have only seen one set for the first gen t3. I don't remember which forks were used but after having them shortened and the custom tripples,the hub set up ect. he said he was about 1500.00 into them and was selling them for 1200.00 if I remember right. So I guess you can make almost anything work it just depends how much cash you want to spend.
