Hi, im at wits end with my 83 big red project:crazy:

I got the shifter to work again but now it sticks up as i downshift? (shifter doesnt spring back level). neutral is all the way up on it.

I just had the motor rebuilt, has great spark with new harness, new cdi and new ign. coil. -but- it has spark only when pullstarted, no spark with the electric starter? i checked wiring everythings correct with exception of i bypassed the neutral saftey switch (just ran that wire to a ground)
The bike Will NOT START? new carb. valves correct motor timing correct, sprayed either, checked for fire, wont even pop off the either, im stumped...

any help would be appreciated:D the shops around here know nothing about these older motors

The only non correct part on this bike is the stator was robbed from a 1984 big red, it did run before but was always a pain to start:crazy:

Had same problem while ago on my 84 200s.this may sound crazy, but I tightened my plug about 1/8".that was just enough to get the full compression.just don't over tighen.maybe good idea to use antiseize on threads??someone will chime in that knows way more than I.hope that helps

There's one thing that could be causing the no-start. Make sure your motor is firing at the top of the compression stroke. It's very easy to put the timing advance/pick-up together wrong, and have it firing 180 degrees out, at the top of the exhaust stroke.

do not ground the neutral safety switch. if your not goig to use it, leave it disconnected. grounding it means it does not let the bike start in any gear. it thinks it is always in gear in stead of N.
