Hey guys I'm looking at a 350x with the quad conversion kit and was wondering how well those kits handle? i would get the 350x front but I think it would be cool to run the quad front end at our local quad XC series in the 400cc and under class, and then switch to the tripples for regular riding and matbe some OTC this year.
Also, is there and suspension or a-arms that work with the coversion?

I dont think you can just switch between 4 wheels to 3 wheels that easy. Im pretty sure its welded, not bolt on. All the ones ive seen that is.
I also never saw a 350x with one, just 250r's. Have a picture?

Racing would be the LAST thing you would want to do with it either way. Astro's are welded,3X4's were bolt on. Neither kit was by any means performance oriented, even w the Works rezzy shocks. I would be interested in buying it ,as it is a part of our history. Please email me if you don't buy it,or do and want to sell it. Thanx

I was just curious because it would have been a unique quad, but if its a bad idea I wont do it. I'll try to get some pics of it tonight and see which kind of conversion it is. If its in decent shape when I go look at it I'll pick it up.

You will be when the frame folds in half landing a jump.

How many times have you seen that happen?

I've seen normal 3 wheeler frames fold from jumping. I don't want to even think about a welded frame extension with all that extra weight up front being landed on.
I'm not saying it will happen, but the fact is, they were poor attempts to convert them to quads in a squeeze. They have nothing on the strength of a modern quad frame, or even an old one, non three wheeler based. They are good for fooling around the house and some trails, but that's about the extent of it.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but aren't you a younger member?
I've seen many broken 350X frames, I've been riding for about 25 years. They don't just explode and send the rider to sure death. They snap in a couple of known areas and it's usually noticed not long after it happens. I wouldn't go jumping the bike after that but you could certainly ride it out of the woods and then some.
Did you know a big reason these kits were offered was because so many people had trikes they bought to race but no longer could after the ban? People had two year old trikes with a lot of money in them, then all of a sudden trikes weren't allowed on the track anymore. Adding another wheel was a viable, cheap alternative. I doubt they handle as well as a regular quad, but I certainly wouldn't call it unsafe. 25 years I've been riding and I've never even seen a picture of a quad conversion that "folded", so I'd love to see what it is you're talking about. Until you show me what it is you're talking about, please refrain from speculating.

He sent me pics of that 350x conversion, I think it looks horrible..
Yeah they chose functionality over style on those, and considering they werent very functional, you can imagine the styling!

Maybe they are durable, but to me they just don't look safe for heavy abuse.

Someone seen pictures, then someone should post them.
The conversion kits filled a void at the time and businesses that built them tried to use materials readily available at the time as cost is always a factor, not everybody can afford aftermarket frames. We see things differently at this date in time the technology along with parts and equipment have improved over the past 25 years, we don’t drive or own the same type cars as we did back then. I like how people post their distaste about something they never owner or ridden, I’ve owned two and they can be fun.
Never seen a trike fold in half, I guess if your jumping buses, seen lots of cracks, you need to do regular inspections, and for those people who do race and jump, how many use stock shocks?

Why not just get a cheap 400ex if you want a quad?

I've always thought the conversions were really neat. They did fill a void, that's for sure. If a 350x on 4 wheels is what someone wants, I have a brand new Powroll 350x/250x-300ex conversion kit.

The trike I saw fold over was a first gen 250R, he landed a rough jump with the front way too far forward nearly straight down (don't ask), and the front tire pushed inwards, bending the forks with enough force that it bent the frame inwards dislodging the engine from the font mount pushing it up into the seat and separating the frame from where the forks attach, just behind that right above the top of the gas tank thus folding over on itself and he nearly went over the edge of a cliff doing it after it threw him almost 20 feet. This thing was a wreck when he got up. But I do suspect the frame wasn't exactly perfect either, so I'm assuming that contributed to it. After that incident he swore never to ride another three wheeler, which is a shame.

I've never seen any trike or quad fold from a jump. Maybe a tree yes, but that's another story. Although I have folded a few moped handlebars against my legs. Those were some interesting runs haha.
