i have an 85 350x that i got in may and i put new rings in it for the first time since 85(unbelievable). it never really idled right and i received some parts with it when i got it and one of the parts was the stock cam. it has wearing on it and i think someone may have possibly purchased and installed an aftermarket cam, without adjusting the fuel to the new cam. could this be my problem for idling and like a backfire kind of sound when deceleration? thanks

No.your pilot jet is to small.jump it up to I believe a .48. Mine has a 50 in it and starts second kick when cold out idles perfect and no more pop on decell

How do I go about doing that?

no more pop on decell

That's bad? My 200X does it like a bit*h but never had any signs of massive wear on anything. That said it needs a carb rebuild and we messed with it a lot to get it to start.

That little deceleration poppidy pop is a lean condition when the throttle is let off. I have found the airscrew 1/4 turn to fix this and or a step or two in the pilot screw. The free Service Manual on this site will help you to do this.

If it does have a cam, it needs to have the valves adjusted, again, in the manual but AM cams like a bit more. Sometimes .005/.006 instead of .003 the manual suggests for a stock cam. Also, if it has a cam and is running stock rocker arms, the generally need to be sent to Powroll or WEB and get hardfaced or the cam being built up is too hard for them and wears them out.

So, you just have a little bit of work to do....

Any idea on cost of this?

Check this article out by ATV ON DEMAND. Lots of good info and a complete price list at the bottom of the page. They had they're rockers hard faced by mega cycle for $136.

To change the pilot you first need to remove the carb and take the fuel bowl off.and like dirtcrasher said, turn the air/fuel screw up
