View Full Version : Bringing Home A 85 250SX Tonight!

I found a 85 250SX on eBay for $500 OBO. Local pickup only. He's just under two hours away. I offered $400. He accepted. I feel it's a decent deal. It's missing the seat and has a known bad carb. It definitely has potential. What ya say boys? Another one saved? I love my Auto-X. But everybody wants bigger , right? From what I hear the SX is a very desireable machine. Hi - Lo, with reverse correct? Better pics to come.

Great machines. No high/lo but 1st is geared fairly low. Reverse yes. Carbs can be a little salty to pick up.

No Hi / Lo has reverse shaft drive . Ist gear is pretty low . Was it on fire ?

Cant get all the pics to work . Does it run ?
Looks like headlight and front fender have been changed . You're gonna like that one for sure .

Looks good, I have been looking at a local one guy is asking $800 obo, was hoping to steal it for around $5-$600 (just waiting for taxes). I am no expert on these machines but from what I read the 85 sx is less desirable because of the rear differential seal?? Apparently they take on water easy. I have found a few 86's around but they are either junk or way too pricey!!! here is a link to the one near me http://redding.craigslist.org/mcy/4278446821.html. I am looking for a trail/hunting trike to hang with my quad partners on the trails in deer season.

Sweet! Craigslist right? I think I may have seen it on there. If its a good runner, then you cant beat the $400 price. Keep us posted on your progress!
Talk to Jim (FlyingW) if you need carb help.

The 86s have just as much water intrusion as the 85. Honda's casting change to the diff and axle tubes didn't fix crap but with a little silicone and elbow grease, that can be minimized. It looks like the battery either exploded or caught on fire but that's easily fixed.

Good work. I've been looking for one of these also. There's a few 85's on craigs in Minneapolis but holding out for an 86.

eBay find. He said it ran but a customer needed a carb for his SX. So they swapped them. I don't know if it was on fire or rattle canned. I tend to buy sight unseen (other than pics). I don't really go through water. Trails and ice. I have an XR250R carb on hand still. I was going to see if it's comparable.

He had it on craigslist also. That's the guy just north of medford, right? He's got a buttload of trikes for sale on c-list, prolly has some parts too. You might want to bring some extra $$ in case you find something interesting. Good luck with it, sx's are like tanks!

Well she's home. She's a little bit more rough than pictures showed. That's to be expected. Plastics are toast. Missing the dash. No headlight, just the shell. Left brake lever snapped off. Looks like I'll be cleaning up some wiring as well. Gas tank is bone dry and rattles. Kinda leary to look inside. Missing a few other things here and there. My goal is for it to be a rider by summer. Then my woman can ride the Auto-X.

Here's a little update guys. I've been busy as hell. Back in school as of Monday. I'm going to be bringing the SX to school tomorrow to put it on a lift and start cleaning it up and start putting on the parts that are starting to come in. A big thank you to a couple very generous members on here. It's been snowing pretty much since I brought it home in a blizzard last Friday night. The muffler is cracked right at the back of the can. Eyeballing one on eBay right now. Missing the entire brake pedal assembly. Missing the battery box cover and tail light. It has a cobbled wire coming from under the right side engine cover going to the left side (didn't look where it connects to yet).

There was a good deal for both pegs, brake pedal assembly and cable on eBay the other day. I may pull the trigger on it. I may try to hold out for an aftermarket pipe.

I ended up getting the SX over to school about 1pm so it should be plenty thawed tomorrow morning so I can get it on the lift.

Thanks man, it was a fun build! Well, the trailer is long gone, put it on craigslist, and for some reason nobody wanted it. So I pretty much gave it away. As far as the rear rack, it had used to be an OE rack, but the previous owner had hacked it up and then half assed welded it to the rear grab bar. It was junk, and got tossed.

I almost bought that trike. I live by the Dells in Baraboo. I recently bought my 250es in Watertown
I've been fixing it up to. It doesn't like to start 15 degrees and colder.
Rebuilt carb. I'm going to need to drill the pilot a bit. I bought a muffler off E bay for around $200.00.
Made in Canada I believe.
Bolt on looks good and is spot on for my stock jetting.
Keep your eyes open I've seen some here locally that are fair priced.
I saw a SX I believe muffler on e bay ( buy it now) for $80.00 bucks?
I wish I had seen that when I was looking.
There are people who sell and aren't looking to price gouge if your patient.
Have fun wrenching. I bought mine and now I want want an SX to.
And a 220x and an R and a .............!!! Ya I think ive got the sickness.

I have my eye on a couple different exhaust options. I got a headlight assembly off a local guy. Great shape for the most part. Has the mounting straps, but I need the rubber grommets. Also the chrome is flaked off the shell and it's rusting. I also traded a FatCat rear swinger to the same guy for an entire 200X front end to swap over to my SX. He also sold me a set of OEM 1st Gen 200X fenders for $50. The rear brake/clutch lever is that real cheap EMGO brand. They didn't specify it in the description. I was hoping for something better.

I've successfully bought parts and other stuff from eBay for several years with very few complaints about sellers. Well I finally learned the hard way. I wanted to buy one of FlyingW's freshly built carbs, but couldn't on accounts of all the other missing parts I have to replace. Well, I found what I thought was a fairly decent used carb. I figured a good cleaning and put it on. If it needed a rebuild kit I would throw one at it later. Seller sent me an email saying he went through the whole thing and cleaned it before shipping. First off. You could smell the varnish through the box. It was double wrapped in plastic inside too. Carb is filthy. The little loop that holds the vent tube is snapped off. (That I can live with) Finally, the reason I'm pissed. The choke plunger is broken off and rusted solid in the carb. Now I'm trying to scrape up whatever scrap I have to take in. Also, whatever spare parts I have lying around to sell so I can buy one of FlyingW's carbs. Which should have done in the first place. I may still try to free up that plunger. Otherwise I'm just going to strip any good parts off the bodies and toss em in the scrap pile. Lesson learned.

Shouldnt be a problem removing that choke plunger. Drill a tiny hole in it, hammer a slightly bigger torx bit into it, and use an impact gun and get it to spin and break free.

DasUberKraut
01-20-2014, 08:47 PM
I dropped the ball on reporting him to eBay. I was half asleep when I opened it and looked at it. Left him feedback right away. Didn't see the flaws until the next day.

As for hammering a torx bit into it. LOL. That sounds sketchy as hell! I may mess with it. I'm just going to wait til I can afford one of FlyingW's carbs.

Edit - No offense intended, Jason. For me to attempt the torx bit trick would be sketchy. I would most likely damage the carb even more. I have no doubt your method is proven. I just don't want to be the guy to destroy it completely. It's better left to someone with experience.

I've searched a bit and can't find an answer...

Will 200X fork tubes fit the 250SX triples? I got my 200X front end tonight. If I don't have to tear into the triples yet, I'd like to wait til I can afford some All Balls for it.

01-23-2014, 08:54 PM
Not sure, but i did just put a 200x front end on my sx last summer. Be aware you will need to grind off a bunch of the sx steering stop, then add a steering stop to the front of the neck for the sx tripples. If nobody chimes in soon i can run out to the garage and measure the tubes on both forks.

DasUberKraut
01-23-2014, 09:34 PM
MRSOUND informed me if I leave the SX triples on I'd require spacers on the axle to use the 200X hub. I'm going to just do the conversion with the loose ball bearings for now and get some All Balls after the rest of the machine is squared away. I wanted to use the SX headlight too. So I may try to modify the SX bracket.

Wow!!! FlyingW!!! Your work is absolutely amazing!!! You made my week, good sir!
Waiting on the choke cable and plunger. I have to hook the wiring back up and rig a fuel supply. Then I can see if this thing actually runs. I did see a few oil puddles under it now that it's been sitting on the lift. One on each side of the engine and one under the differential. I hope it's just gaskets. If he sold me a cracked motor. I'll be upset with myself for not looking it over closely. I'm having a hell-of-a hard time finding SX rubbers for the headlight and seat.

So I had a picture of the slowly growing oil puddles under the right and left sides of the engine and differential. I'm guessing oil seals are in order as well as gaskets. I'm thinking I'm not even going to attempt to run this yet. Are the eBay seal sets any good or do I need to shell out the $100 for OEM? I don't think the Vesrah gasket sets have the oil seals do they?

eBay kit for about $20 to $25

I'll get a set of those after I square up with the couple people waiting on me. are all of those seals accessible from the right and left covers? Or do you have to dig deeper?

Flyingw
02-02-2014, 08:21 PM
Yep, on this motor everything passes through both covers. If the side case drive seal isn't leaking, leave that one alone. The only way to get those seals out is to cut them with a chisel. Not as easy as it sounds.

DasUberKraut
02-02-2014, 09:57 PM

Cleaned up the 200X hub I got in the trade today. One side the bearings were completely blew out. Everything was siezed onto the axle. And inside the hub too. Utilizing various pullers, and some penetrant, everything came apart as it should. Cleaned everything up in the bead blaster and doused it with some CLP. New All Balls installed and reassembled.

I'm not having any luck finding 11" TRX 4/110 rims to fit those Spider Tracs I rescued from the pawn shop the other day.

After thinking about it, too. They will be almost impossible to sell on accounts of shipping will cost as much as the tires. I might be stuck with em. Use em for end tables?

Hey Flyingw... A thought just occurred to me. Will the carb I got from you need to be jetted for the Cobra exhaust? Also, should I be running without an air box lid?

Normally I'd say yes, jetting may be effected but every motor breathes different. The only way to know is watch your plug.

Supertrapp, huh? I bet that has a nice tone to it?

With all these fresh parts now. I'm almost tempted to do a frame up rebuild just so everything is clean. I should have hit a car wash and tried to get some of the caked on clay off before taking it to the shop.

Yep, it sounds good, but the neighbors don't like it as much as I do though, lol. With the pipe on it there is also a pretty big difference in the torque as compared to my other stock exhaust sx.

Any update pics? Is it to tore down now to haul it back down to the car wash to re pressure wash it? I can tell you I had to wash my sx multiple times, using a variety of different sized brushes to get in all the nooks and crannies.

It's pretty much the same as the last update pics. Just kind of gathering parts.

I bought a 2000 Chevy Blazer last week and that's been getting my attention and money. I have to swap out tranny and passenger door. A few other repairs. I haven't been able to haul stuff since my 94 S10 Pickup was destroyed last September.

So I met up with a local guy I know today... Scored huge!

An entire SX wiring harness with dash, key, lights, control switches, CDI, regulator/rectifier... Basically an entire harness. (I just asked for the R/N extension of the harness.)
A pair of SX fender supports (I need the rubbers)
Battery box liner
SX right foot peg with brake pedal (Mine is missing the pedal and is bent)
SX air box
I also got an a near complete 200E rear rack, and grab bar for my brother (It needs the rubber straps for the cross piece above the trunk and the cross piece hardware)

He has a SX hitch for me but we didn't have tools. It's still attached to a rear end assembly. Which leads me to a question. Is there casting marks or any way to differentiate from the 86/87 rear ends versus the 85's? Also, if they are ES versus SX? If he has an 86/87. I'd want to upgrade to the better differential I would think?

I probably shouldn't tell you what I paid but I'll tell you it was only in the double digits. This guy takes care of me. I watched his kids romp around the yard on the 70's and TRX 90. He busted out his 350X and romped that. I'm blown away! That was my first 350X experience.

Flyingw
02-18-2014, 11:36 PM
The ES/SX differentials do not have any casting marks on the outside. That was the main purpose for the ES diffs being natural and the SX being black. The ring gears do have casting marks HA0 for ES and HA6 for SX but no marks indicating year. The only tell is the depth of the sealing groove where the swingarm mates to the diff. The 86/87's have a deeper groove.

DasUberKraut
02-19-2014, 12:01 AM
So without actually separating them. There's no way to tell from the outside for years? His are both black.

Just put in another $100 order to Partzilla for a pile of NOS rubber grommets, fasteners and other hardware. Decided to order a fresh petcock at $36 instead of trying to clean up the one that one was on it. I also bought two sets of 9" 4/110 Douglas Rims last night. One pair with completely bald Maxxis RAZR's and one pair with stocker 400EX rubber. My Cobra came...guy packaged it like crap so it got scratched and dinged from falling out of the package in a few places. I'm angry...but it's still a New Cobra, right? Thinking about leaving neutral feedback. My PRM 6-Pack rack and 200X skid plate came. The Hondaline Big Red speedo assembly came. Wasn't there someone that was selling new face plates for those things? All freshly printed and minty. Lastly I ordered a new aluminum license plate from http://www.wisconsinatvplates.com They look like the WI automobile plates. The last one I put on was plastic and broke on the first bump I hit. So I've put a little bit of wrench time in the SX... I pulled the clutch cover. Replaced the gasket and oil filter. Hopefully the torn gasket that was in there was the only leak on the motor. A couple of the bolts felt questionable when I was torquing them down, and reckless PO's gouged the sealing surface with screw drivers instead of tapping the cover loose with a rubber mallet. Not sure I'm getting the best seal. Put a different N/R wire on. Where does the second holder bolt to? I have the one by the cable stay. Can't figure out the other one though. Fresh Flyingw carb installed and conneted to the controls. Controls mounted. Rear brakes working amazing. I put fresh electrical tape on all the junctions of the wiring harness and put it back on the frame. Can someone take a couple pictures of how their harness is routed? I'm having some isues under the headlight getting stuff to fit nicely and back by the Rectifier. Headlight assembled with NOS glass and LED bulb. Dash had to be mounted with machine screws an nylocks on the upper two holes. I ordered NOS pins but my money was refunded. They are still listed as available though???

Yeah... I don't know anymore. Walked into class this morning and found another puddle under the right crank case. I made the mistake of putting the skid plate on after putting the cover back on with a fresh gasket. It had been leaking again but wasn't hitting the floor or lift where it was parked until it filled the skid plate and poured over. Wiped it all off and watched it with a flashlight on it. It looked like there was still a small gap so I gave each bolt a slight turn. When I torqued them down they were at the low to mid torque range. I figured no big deal. Snapped the bolt that holds the reverse cable stay. There already was a hole on the top right behind the dip stick that stripped out before I owned the machine.

So iI'm thinking I'm just going to bring this back home and park it for now. I can't afford a different good running motor that doesn't leak. I can't afford to just replace the inner right case half. If I tear into it that deep then I'm doing a complete rebuild. I guess I still have my Auto-X for now and a beater 200E.

I should just disassemble the whole SX and slowly rebuild it properly.

Keep in mind the threaded holes are deeper than the stock case bolts meaning if you got a case bolt about 5mm longer, you should be able to grab virgin threads.

Where is the best place to separate the motor from the rear end? I'm going to start stripping the first SX I got. I need parts off it to make this new one proper and I would rather have spare parts in the shed for easy access. I will most likely start to get stuff blasted and powdered slowly as funds allow. Put the white rears on. Not really happy with them. Holes don't line up very well. Ended up twisting once it was bolted together. Stress cracks in the finish just from sitting in a box since they arrived. Get what you pay for I guess. I'll probably invest in a better set.

Put the Cobra on after a couple hours of removing a broken grab bar mounting bolt. Different grab bar. I had to sell the PRM 6-Pack Rack I had.

Lastly, I threw on Douglas .190's with Kenda Bear Claws.

Tomorrow I'll do the white front fender. Still digging around the storage for a better front tire as well.

I'm hoping I just need to do an oil change. But I'm starting to get some kind of chatter / grinding while downshifting. It's only done it a few times but I'm starting to get worried.

On a side note. I ordered a waterproof 12V cig lighter with locking feature, a mount for it and got a SlipGrip mount for my cell phone to mount on the handlebars so I can run GPS and a Speedometer. I wanted to mount it on the lower bar to the left of the dash, but I think the tank will interfere. So it's I mounted it up for now until I have the cig lighter pieces installed. As much as I want to install my Hondaline speedo, I think I'm going to sell it.
