Alot has changed in suspension technology over the years, different oil for different dampening characteristics..variable load springs. Etc....

I probably explore some of those options before McGyvering shocks with weld!!

The way to get that effect on the front forks that the magazine article talks about without all the welding is to use the damping rods out of the 83-84 250R. I've done the swap (it is bolt on, no special effort required) and agree it is an improvement. I think there is a thread about it somewhere on here... I'll try to dig it up.
