I've always heard about these "short course kits" but I have no idea what they consist of, or what they are for. Can someone enlighten me on this ?.

Bob, They where produced By Honda as a optional installation in place of the stock tank and triple tree . They were produced for the 85-86 250R only and were for racing on short tracks. The kit was in a box with, lower triple (steering stop position cut down), Gas tank (1.5 gal ) which replaced the 2.5 gal. tank. Radiator brackets and hardware so the tank sets back about an inch and provides clearance so that the front wheel can be turned sharper. Basically it was so when you got to far sideways in a turn you could steer out because the front wheel can be turned so it is almost sideways. I have both a stock unit and a short track unit I will take some photo's and post them. Believe me that setup has saved my arse LOT's of times.

I also have a ST kit on my R. I fell in love with the look of those extended shrouds the first time I saw pictures on the boards! Makes an already bada** machine look extra BADA**!!!!!! And there's nothing wrong with that ;)
Outlaw #24 has said it best, the kit has saved me many times as well. His avatar picture really shows you what it can do.
On a side note, why has nobody on 3WW made an effort to reproduce and sell these kits? I am sure they would sell! Reproduce the tank is the one thing you'd have to farm out to a plastics company.
Here's a link to the reproduced DC Short Track kit shrouds, and NO YOU CANNOT MOUNT THESE ON YOUR STOCK 85/68 250R TANK!!!

The tabs are 1 inch. I used u-clamp flat bottoms.184014184016 Here are some other photo's of the short track stuff.184017,1840181840191840201840211840221840231 84024184025184026184027That is why we need short track shrouds.184028184029184030. I hope you all can identify the differences. If not Ask. NO IT"S Not for sale. That stuff is going on the stock unit that I rode at all of the 3 wheeler events. It will be discussed on a Build Thread! also I wanted to let you know that one of my flatt trackers has a home made set up, hence the photo of the triples. One stock and one ground off to around the same dimensions as what comes in the kit. At that time all I had was the Tank.184032
this is the clamp that came in the kit. 184033 that was Monday. Photo 9 shows what all came in the kit.

Thanks outlaw !. It's one of those things I've wondered about for awhile. Now I know. So the whole thing is to increase the amount of stearing from stop to stop, if I am reading this right.

Yes, so you can steer out of turns.
Think about it, if you are hauling a** around a flat corner with a handful of throttle on your 250R what's going to happen? The rear end is going to slide out. Now you could just let off the throttle, but that would slow you down and in a race slowing down isn't exactly your first choice. The ST kit allows you to steer out of that slide by increasing the degrees you can cut the front wheel. So you can stay on the throttle and point the front wheel where you want to go.
It really is an awesome kit from Honda. Like I said, I initially fell in love with the look of those big swooping radiator shrouds. But when I installed in I realized it gave the 250R new abilities. i honestly never worry about not being able to steer out of a corner. And you can grind the steering stops on the frame down a little bit to add more steering.
The only downside to this kit is that the fuel tank has less capacity.
