Hey guys, I have been neglecting my 86'R for a while. As it is one of my garage queens. I cleaned out the carb stuck her back on (cause she wouldn't start) and changed the plugs. I finally got it started and the rpms shot through the roof. I pulled the tether and it didn't do anything. I quickly shifted into fourth and let her die. I know this was a relatively cheap box when I bought it. When I built the bike all was good, but it would not top out in high gear. Almost like too big of a main jet. After two weeks of rejetting, plug chopping and pulling my hair out, I bought the new CDI and it solved the problem. Can the CDI keep the tether kill from functioning. Very frustrated
Thanks for any advice

Ahh. the old death rev. The very reason I do not start any bike without the chain on and the rear brakes working. I'm sure the cdi is fine.A 2 stroke will run without a spark at all in high rpms, you could have pulled the wire off the plug and it would still run. You have one of two things going on.One would be a major air leak causing it to rev out. The other and more likely since you mentioned having the carb apart is the slot on the slide is not aligned with the pin in the carb which will hold the slide wide open.It sounds stupid and unlikely but I have done it myself once and only once.

Is it a OEM cdi or aftermarket ?

It is aftermarket CDI. Will pull the carb off this weekend and check for air leaks.
Thanks a lot guys

I think it is a Rickys CDI. Bought it two years ago.
